Cube only designates the “Actionteam” moniker to bikes that are truly intended and tuned for competition. Therefore, it shouldn’t be surprising that the Cube Stereo Hybrid Actionteam is perfect for the demands of hard Enduro racing, and in terms of its components is likely the most capable E-Bike in our group test. The downhill oriented geometry and performance is well complemented by the high-end Fox Factory suspension. The battery pack is also fitted neatly into the downtube creating a nicely integrated system. In turn, the power provided by the motor is effectively handled by the crisp SRAM EX1 drivetrain which shifts in all conditions. Powerful Shimano Saint brakes, durable Newmen Evolution wheels and stable Schwalbe tyres with Super Gravity casings complete the package, which is undeniably ready-to-race. The Cube Stereo Hybrid is available in five different component specs priced between € 3099 and € 5799 – the model we tested is the top-end option for € 5799.

Geometry

The Cube Stereo Hybrid 160 is available in four different frame sizes from S to XL. The slack 65.8° head angle and 473 mm chainstays promise calm and stable riding on the downhills as well as good climbing capabilities. The long chainstays should help keep the front wheel planted on steeper uphill sections. In contrast, the 440 mm reach in Size L is relatively short, though this should make for a more agile ride. The steep 74.3° seat angle will likely also be helpful for climbing.

Components

As with all Cube’s E-Mountainbikes, the Stereo Hybrid 160 is powered by a powerful Bosch Performance CX motor and is equipped with a fully integrated 500 Wh capacity Bosch PowerTube battery. The model we tested is an impressive package with top-end Fox Factory suspension consisting of a Fox 36 fork and Float DPX2 shock, both glinting with the slick Kashima coating on the stanchions. The Fox dropper post has the same coating, matching perfectly. The E-Bike is content with its eight gears, shifted by a snappy SRAM EX1 drivetrain. Braking duties are handled by top-end gravity oriented Shimano Saint brakes and the large 200 mm rotors offer excellent stopping power.

The combination of an 820 mm Race Face SixC 35 bar and short Race Face Turbine stem makes the go-fast intentions of this E-Enduro clear. The package is completed with a set of durable Newmen Evolution SL E.35 wheels and a Schwalbe Magic Mary and Nobby Nic tyre combo – both tyres have the Super Gravity casing which should make punctures a rarity.

Motor & Battery

Cube uses Bosch motors exclusively in its E-Mountainbikes. The Stereo Hybrid 160 Actionteam is fitted with a Bosch Performance CX model. This motor is probably the most commonly found on E-Mountainbikes today and with good reason. With a maximum torque of 75 Nm, for a long time it was the benchmark to beat and it still ranks amongst the top five motors on the market for power. A unique feature of the motor is the tiny chainring, that turns 2.5-times as fast as you are pedalling. That means a 16-tooth chainring corresponds to approximately a 40-tooth in ‘pedalling terms’. That 75 Nm provides a decent push along the trail, with excellent acceleration out of corners and a purposeful feel up the hills. Sadly, above the 25 km/h assistance limit the motor reaches its limits, it provides noticeable more resistance to pedalling compared with some of its competitors.

Integration and a slim look were very important for the Cube engineers here, so the battery has been fully integrated into the carbon down tube. It is protected by a removable cover and when required, you can simply pull the battery out of the bottom of the down tube.

The motor has four assistance levels. Along with the standard ECO, Tour and Turbo mode, Bosch provides the brilliant eMTB mode. This progressive mode varies the power output based on how hard you are pedalling and how much effort you are putting in. The eMTB mode ranges from the 120% assistance of Tour mode to the 300% assistance of Turbo mode. That large dynamic range makes it suitable for most everyday riding, without having to constantly change assistance modes. The motor is also very good at detecting changes in rider input and adjusting the corresponding power output from the motor effectively. On steep uphills, you get the full brunt of the motor power when you pedal hard, and on flatter sections, the motor dials it down when you’re cruising along. Overall that provides a system that allows you to ride with grip, traction and the right support from the motor at all times — Bosch marketing speak calls it “Optimized Trail Control”, we would say the E-Bike responds perfectly to your pedalling input.

Real-world range

40.15 km / 778 metres vertical

Quoted figures for range tend to be on the optimistic side so we like to test bikes for ourselves, draining a whole battery and seeing how far the bike will go. For this test we managed 40.15 km and 778 metres of ascending, staying in the highest power setting throughout. Please note that these values in no way represent rigorous or normalised testing. Instead, they should be seen as ballpark figures. Using lower assistance modes increases the range significantly too.

You can find the exact details of our test ride with the Cube Stereo Hybrid 160 Actionteam here.

On the trail

Uphill

A supremely capable climber!

Whilst some people seem to discuss endlessly about E-Bikes with long chainstays, we can only shrug our shoulders. Long chainstays improve uphill performance and serve to turn E-MTBs into veritable mountain goats. Admittedly not ones that skip lightly from ledge to ledge, but ones that stoically forge their way uphill. That’s exactly what the Cube Stereo Hybrid 160, with its 473 mm chainstays, does thanks to its excellent weight distribution. Despite the power offered by the Bosch motor, we rarely, if ever, encountered the front wheel lifting. The Schwalbe Nobby Nic at the rear also offers plenty of traction meaning that we rarely ran out of grip or skidded out.

It’s not all such excellent news though. On particularly narrow sections, the hefty 25 kg weight requires a lot of input to manoeuvre in order to avoid having to get off and push. Tight switchbacks can also be a challenge – we think that mixed wheel sizes (a narrow 29” front and fat 27.5”+ rear) would help here.

The Cube Stereo Hybrid 160 can be ridden up nearly every hill
# The Cube Stereo Hybrid 160 can be ridden up nearly every hill

Downhill

As the name suggests, this E-Mountainbike is all about downhill action.  With the identical spec to the team bikes from the successful Cube Actionteam, we feel absolutely secure aboard this rocket when powering through rocks, roots and tight trails at Mach 10. The wide Race Face bars offer lots of control and the 170 mm travel provided by the Fox 36 fork are plush, sensitive and used efficiently. At the rear we felt that we were missing a little bit of pop and feedback – the Fox shock sits relatively low in its travel and doesn’t provide a very lively feel over the trail. In rough terrain, the higher weight of the Stereo Hybrid 160 is a plus, and it rides like it’s on rails.

One could probably eke out even more from the already excellent performance by fitting a coil shock and speccing mixed wheel sizes.

Trail

Try not to pedal above 25 km/h!

On our test loop, there’s no trail that can slow down the Cube Stereo Hybrid 160. This E-Enduro performs very well and the engineers at Cube have managed to create an E-MTB that strikes the perfect balance between aggressive and relaxed riding. It provides a comfortable ride without sapping your energy and the complete package is put together impeccably and a true joy to ride. The spec isn’t missing anything and won’t ever be holding you back during your rides.

Of course, it’s not much fun having to pedal and fight the resistance of the Bosch Performance CX motor above its 25 km/h assistance limit, but if you can see past that and ride below that when pedalling, you’ll have a hell of a lot of fun aboard this E-MTB.

Loose corners at high speeds? With these grippy Schwalbe tyres it's no problem at all.
# Loose corners at high speeds? With these grippy Schwalbe tyres it's no problem at all.

We noticed:

  • Sluggish rear suspension The rear suspension swallows up most things but doesn’t feel all that lively. This E-MTB tends to sit quite deep in its travel, which allows it to plough through the biggest obstacles but doesn’t an offer an immediately playful ride. Run a little less sag at the rear (25%) and you’ll lose some comfort, but the responsiveness and agility of the suspension will improve – just try it out.
  • High weight Unfortunately there’s no real solution to this one, but we do feel we should mention it. With a weight of just under 25 kg, the Stereo Hybrid 160 is too heavy to “float” over the trails. Ideally, we would wish for this E-Bike to lose 3–4 kg.
The suspension kinematics at the rear are missing a little feedback and liveliness

Summary: Cube Stereo Hybrid 160

“Ready to race –

in every single way” Rico Haase

The Stereo Hybrid 160 isn’t just for racers – it will ride just as well on your home trails or on longer rides out. Cube is well known for carefully observing market trends and for reacting to the desires of its customers. It’s no surprise that this top-end model is fitted with the very best components at an unbeatable price. In terms of value this E-MTB is in a class of its own and doesn’t put a foot wrong.

The Cube Stereo Hybrid 160 is worthy of our Best Value award and is highly recommended by our team.

About the test

Please expand for details

On our test runs, we usually stay in the highest assistance mode and drain the battery completely at least once. We then publish our results on our Strava account.

Our loop has everything we need to test what our E-bikes are capable of:

  • Tight uphill trails with roots, rocks and loam
  • Flat trails with small climbing sections
  • Fast and flowing downhills
  • Long gravel trails up- and downhill

E-bikes are subjected to our route multiple times to allow us to draw our conclusions.

We tested the Cube Stereo Hybrid 160  here:

  • Bamberg/ Bad Kreuznach, Germany: The riding provides narrow and tight trails with rooty, rocky sections, steep and technical uphills as well as flowing downhills.
  • Aínsa, Spain: These trails have played host to the legendary Enduro World Series.

E-Enduro, E-Trailbike, Hardtail, Downhiller, Rennrad – mir macht jedes Bike Spaß.
I ride everything: E-Enduro, E-Trailbikes, hardtails, downhill, road – I enjoy it all, whether it’s E-assisted or not. I’ll admit that I do quite like having a motor on the uphills though. There’s lots to love about flowing trails; natural or built. The only thing I hate – switchbacks.

E-biking is new for me, but it’s also super fun. Unmatched fun factor for me is only in races. You can find me at most enduro and downhill mass start races.
