Rocky Mountain Altitude Powerplay Alloy: the Canadian brand has presented it’s beloved Altitude Powerplay, but with an aluminium frame. On board is the brand’s own Dyname motor, a built-in battery with a 632 Wh capacity, 27.5” wheels and plush suspension with 150 mm travel at the back and 160 mm at the front. Here’s all the information on the new Rocky Mountain Altitude Powerplay Alloy!

Rocky Mountain Altitude Powerplay Alloy: Info and Pricing

The Rocky Mountain Altitude Powerplay has only been available with a carbon frame up until now, but the brand has now introduced a more budget-friendly, alloy-framed version of the capable eMTB for 2019. The four-bar linkage of the E-Enduro bike is fitted with a 210 x 55 mm metric shock which controls 150 mm travel, whilst a 160 mm fork is fitted at the front. As you’d expect for a Rocky Mountain bike, the proven, adjustable Ride 9 geometry is used, while a fully integrated battery and the powerful Dyname 3.0 motor provide the power. The compact motor has been placed to keep the centre of gravity low, resulting in a very planted ride feel.

The new Rocky Mountain Altitude Powerplay Alloy, and its aluminium frame should make the hearts of E-Enduro fans out there race
# The new Rocky Mountain Altitude Powerplay Alloy, and its aluminium frame should make the hearts of E-Enduro fans out there race - the typically Rocky Mountain agile handling and 160/150 mm travel front /rear should make this a similarly capable performer as the carbon version.

Geometry

In order to allow you to tune the ride of the bike just how you want it, Rocky Mountain came up with the Ride 9 system. This provides nine different settings you can run your bike in. For example, the geometry can be changed between slack, neutral and steep, while other settings allow you to change the progression of the suspension kinematics. This is made possible with two separate keyed chips, which can be tuned individually allowing you to adapt the E-Trailbike to your own riding style, weight and terrain you are on.

Components

The Rocky Mountain Altitude Powerplay Allow will be available in two component specs for 2019. The more expensive version, the “Alloy 70” is fitted with Fox suspension components. Up front there’s a Fox 36 with 160 mm travel, while at the back a Fox Float DPS shock smoothly controls the 150 mm travel at the rear. Shifting is taken care of by a SRAM GX Eagle drivetrain with 12 gears. Stopping is handled by SRAM Guide RE brakes with 200 mm rotors.

The cheaper model, the Rocky Mountain Altitude Powerplay Alloy 50 uses RockShox suspension to manage the hits. That consists of a Yari RC fork and Deluxe RT shock. Braking is provided by SRAM Guide T brakes and a SRAM GX drivetrain with a Sunrace cassette does the shifting. Both models use wide 27.5” wheels fitted with Maxxis Minion DHF and Maxxis Aggressor WT tyres, both 2.5” at the front and rear respectively.

Motor & Batter

The Dyname 3.0 motor system was developed in Canada and is now in its third generation. It first appeared in 2010 on a city E-Bike and since then has been continuously developed and improved. With the bottom bracket integrated into the frame, your pedalling forces stay isolated from the motor system, preventing unnecessary loading or creaking and improving the durability of the unit.

The silent brushless motor provides smooth and powerful assistance and is still easy to ride above the 25 km/h assistance limit. The integrated torque sensor results in a natural ride feeling, though, if you load the pedal whilst standing you’ll notice that the motor wants to start moving – that feels a little unfinished and disturbs us a little. The assistance modes are controlled with the iWoc TRIO remote and can be adjusted easily with your thumb. Colourful LEDs let you know the battery charge and what assistance mode you are in. A walk function is available with this system.

The battery is fixed inside the down tube and can’t be removed for charging or transport. This full-integration does allow a less voluminous down tube and look good, but for real-world usage it could be  alittle annoying, unless you have a pkug in your garage. The quick-charger allows the 500 Wh battery to be charged in 3 hours and 20 minutes, whilst the 632 Wh battery will be charged in 4 hours and 10 mins.

Opinion @eMTB-News.de

The Rocky Mountain Altitude Powerplay Alloy uses an aluminium frame to offer consumers a more competitive price, or as an alternative for carbon-sceptics. If this E-Enduro bike is just as agile and quick as its carbon brother, then we expect to see quite a few of these on the trails for 2019.

We're rarely in Canada, but the Rocky Mountain Altitude Powerplay Alloy should be great to ride on our home trails as well

What do you think of the Rocky Mountain Altitude Powerplay Alloy with its aluminium frame?
