Haibike is one of the big players in the E-Mountainbike world. The German brand has led with new developments, innovations and technologies for the last 10 years. The Hardnine is an E-Hardtail equipped with a flawless carbon frame in a sleek matt-black finish. Despite the solid components and Bosch motor, there’s an interesting figure here. Weighing in at just over 18 kg, this E-Bike is definitely a lightweight option in its class, and when it was first introduced was one of the slimmest options available.

As the name suggests, this is a 29er. Large wheels paired with XC-genes mean this E-Bike arrives with a decent portion of quick handling and speed. The Haibike Xduro Hardnine 9.0 is available for € 4999.

Components

You’ll immediately notice the 500 Wh semi-integrated Bosch PowerPack battery which sits clearly visible on the downtube of the pretty carbon frame and fuelling the powerful Bosch Performance CX motor. The top of the range Haibike Hardnine 9.0 is equipped with Shimano shifting and braking components. The Shimano XT drivetrain shifts the 11-gears with a matching XT shifter, which in turn is attached to the 740 mm bars. A definite coup for the Hardnine 9.0 is that it is equipped with a dropper post. That’s particularly helpful on technical terrain and riding, where it improves handling a lot. The narrow rims are shod with Schwalbe Rocket Ron tyres. Quick riders can control their speed effectively with the Magura MT4 brakes.

Motor & Battery

Haibike has fitted the Hardnine 9.0 with a Bosch Performance CX model. This motor is probably the most commonly found on E-Mountainbikes today and with good reason. With a maximum torque of 75 Nm, for a long time it was the benchmark to beat and it still ranks amongst the top five motors on the market for power. A unique feature of the motor is the tiny chainring, that turns 2.5-times as fast as you are pedalling. That means a 16-tooth chainring corresponds to approximately a 40-tooth in ‘pedalling terms’. That 75 Nm provides a decent push along the trail, with excellent acceleration out of corners and a purposeful feel up the hills. Sadly, above the 25 km/h assistance limit the motor reaches its limits, it provides noticeable more resistance to pedalling compared with some of its competitors.

# The Bosch Performance CX motor provides a decent push up to 25 km/h - at higher speeds it saps your enjoyment with a lot of pedalling resistance.

# The Bosch Purion display fits perfectly with this E-Hardtail.
The Bosch PowerPack battery is semi-integrated
# The Bosch PowerPack battery is semi-integrated - and offers a 500 Wh capacity.

As this frame has been on the market for several years and at the time integration wasn’t really a topic people were concerned about, the battery is fitted on top of the downtube. The battery is semi-integrated, but that doesn’t really compare with more modern designs. Despite this, the interface between frame and battery is well-executed and looks good.

The motor has four assistance levels. Along with the standard ECO, Tour and Turbo mode, Bosch provides the brilliant eMTB mode. This progressive mode varies the power output based on how hard you are pedalling and how much effort you are putting in. The eMTB mode ranges from the 120% assistance of Tour mode to the 300% assistance of Turbo mode. That large dynamic range makes it suitable for most everyday riding, without having to constantly change assistance modes. The motor is also very good at detecting changes in rider input and adjusting the corresponding power output from the motor effectively. On steep uphills, you get the full brunt of the motor power when you pedal hard, and on flatter sections, the motor dials it down when you’re cruising along. Overall that provides a system that allows you to ride with grip, traction and the right support from the motor at all times — Bosch marketing speak calls it “Optimized Trail Control”, we would say the E-Bike responds perfectly to your pedalling input.

Real-world range

Quoted figures for range tend to be on the optimistic side so we like to test bikes for ourselves, draining a whole battery and seeing how far the bike will go. For this test we managed 40.8 km and 899 metres of ascending, staying in the highest power setting throughout. Please note that these values in no way represent rigorous or normalised testing. Instead, they should be seen as ballpark figures. Using lower assistance modes increases the range significantly too.

You can find the exact details of our test ride with the Haibike Xduro Hardnine 9.0 here.

On the trail

Uphill

Wow! This thing is a climbing beast!

Thanks to the low weight of just under 18 kg and the excellent power provided by the Bosch Performance CX, the Haibike Xduro Hardnine 9.0 cruises stoically up any slope. The stiff carbon frame helps here. With no discernible flex in the bottom bracket, every ounce of power is put directly into driving you forwards. The low cockpit keeps us low over the bike, encouraging us to ride ever steeper slopes in complete control.

The 2.25” Schwalbe Rocket Ron tyres come directly from the XC race circuit and fly effortlessly forwards. For our tastes, we could do with a little more puncture resistance and traction on the rear wheel though.

The Haibike Xduro Hardnine 9.0 can be ridden playfully and quickly along the trails.
# The Haibike Xduro Hardnine 9.0 can be ridden playfully and quickly along the trails.

Downhill

Keep a tight grip on the narrow bars on the way downhill.

An E-Hardtail can be capable on the downhills if the components and geometry are right. In terms of components, the Hardnine 9.0 has only two flaws. For one, we have to mention the small 180 mm disc rotors. We also found the 740 mm bars too narrow for larger riders to steer the 29” wheels precisely. The RockShox SID offers 100 mm travel and takes the shock and fright out of the biggest hits.

On choppy terrain, we had to keep a tight grip on the bar, because this E-MTB likes to buck and turn thanks to the stiff carbon frame. Thankfully, the dropper post allows us to get the saddle out of the way and improves the handling significantly.

If the ground isn't too rough, the Hardnine really enjoys a bit of speed
# If the ground isn't too rough, the Hardnine really enjoys a bit of speed - the dropper post improves the handling in technically demanding sections.

Trail

XC-style trails are a lot of fun!

Where do we feel most comfortable aboard this E-Bike? On normal trails that aren’t all too rough, though we’ll happily take roots, forest, sand and loose ground in our stride. That’s exactly where the Hardnine 9.0 is a lot of fun – at least as long as you’re not riding faster than the 25 km/h assistance limit. Riding with motor assistance, the friendly character, comfortable position and straight-line stability reward your riding. The quick acceleration wells you up with tears of joy out of every corner.

Where there’s light, there’s also shade. Here the shade is thrown by the performance of the Bosch motor above its 25 km/h assistance limit, and is ever-present during our test rides. This E-Hardtail wants to go faster and faster, but does so with difficulty if you don’t have the legs of an XC-pro like Nino Schurter. It takes a lot of effort to ride longer sections above 25 km/h and you’ll inevitably have to brake in frustration to allow your heart rate to get back to a healthy level.

Out of the gate, the acceleration of the E-MTB makes us well up with tears of joy.

"Manicured" trails are ridden at full speed
# "Manicured" trails are ridden at full speed - our tester had a lot of fun on this kind of terrain.

We noticed:

  • Comfortable and high-quality frame The carbon frame is frill-free and designed with modern lines. The frame offers a comfortable position which will allow you to get far afield and spend a lot of time riding.
  • 180 mm rotors Even though it’s a lightweight E-Hardtail, small rotors are not meant for an E-Bike. Safety should be a priority and we would like to see something larger.
  • Narrow barsThe  740 mm bars are too narrow to allow the 29” wheels to be steered precisely in all situations. A wider bar would be particularly helpful for larger riders.
The 740 mm bars fitted to the Haibike Xduro Hardnine 9.0 are a little too narrow for our tastes.

Summary: Haibike Xduro Hardnine 9.0

“Oh my goodness,

this rides fast! Wow!” Rico Haase

The Haibike Xduro Hardnine 9.0 is a great E-Hardtail which offers comfort, stability and well-mannered riding. The high-quality carbon frame offers a dynamic design and lovely matte finish. The low weight combined with the powerful motor results in a very agile E-MTB.

It’s only the performance of the Bosch motor above 25 km/h that limits our enthusiasm. You’ll blaze through to the assistance limit and then feel like someone’s hit the brakes. Motors from other manufacturers offer significantly better performance here.

About the test

Please expand for details

On our test runs, we usually stay in the highest assistance mode and drain the battery completely at least once. We then publish our results on our Strava account.

Our loop has everything we need to test what our E-bikes are capable of:

  • Tight uphill trails with roots, rocks and loam
  • Flat trails with small climbing sections
  • Fast and flowing downhills
  • Long gravel trails up- and downhill

E-bikes are subjected to our route multiple times to allow us to draw our conclusions.

We tested the Haibike Xduro Hardnine 9.0 here:

  • On the trails around Bamberg, Germany. The riding provides narrow and tight trails with rooty, rocky sections, steep and technical uphills as well as flowing downhills.

I ride everything: E-Enduro, E-Trailbikes, hardtails, downhill, road – I enjoy it all, whether it’s E-assisted or not. I’ll admit that I do quite like having a motor on the uphills though. There’s lots to love about flowing trails; natural or built. The only thing I hate – switchbacks.
