Bosch Performance CX – compact and powerful

It’s been a long wait for the followup to the stalwart Bosch Performance CX and there’s been much speculation about what a new version would bring. Now it’s finally here. The new Bosch Performance CX motor is lighter, more compact and better! The completely redesigned unit produces a maximum torque of 75 Nm and the magnesium housing pushes its weight below 3kg – it now weighs in at 2.9 kg. That means that the new CX is roughly 25% lighter than its predecessor. Its reduced size, 48% smaller, makes it just over half the size of the previous model. It’s also apparent that this update forgoes the tiny chainring and sizes up to a more conventional option. The placement of the driveshaft is particularly important for successful integration and design of E-Mountainbike suspension kinematics. The new design sees the position of crank axle move to the edge of the casing, allowing the design of shorter chainstays and more agile handling geometries.

“Bosch is one of the biggest drivers in the E-MTB sector and has several products that have contributed significantly to its development. Now it’s time for the next evolutionary stage. With our new Peformance Line CX we offer the ultimate Uphill Flow feeling. This CX will continue to be the first choice for eMountainbikers. The compact size of the drive unit makes it possible for manufacturers to integrate the system even better and to build frames with shorter chainstays. In addition, the weight of eMTBs will also be reduced. That means that the bikes will be just as agile and manoeuvrable as mountainbikes without an electric drive and so offer an even bigger boost to riding fun” explains Claus Fleischer, Managing Director of Bosch eBike Systems.

The Bosch Performance CX is also available as a speed version which provides assistance up to 45 km/h.

Bosch Performance Cruise – steady and long-lasting

„Finally there’s

an E-MTB version!“  Rico Haase

The Bosch development team identified a gap between the Active and Performance Line and has introduced a new motor for E-Hardtails, or even the still fledgling market of E-Gravelbikes. The Performance Cruise motor is based on the current Active Line model, but offers more support with its 65 Nm torque and also features the progressive eMTB mode. This motor fills out the Active Line range and furthers its ambitions to be a key player in the active rider segment.

Right back when the Active Line motor was first presented, we begged Bosch to release this motor for E-Mountainbikes. At the time, we were huge fans of its performance and the decoupling of the motor from the pedals above the 25 km/h assistance limit was class-leading and completely new for a Bosch unit. At the time, there wasn’t a clear path in that direction. Now, just under two years later, exactly that eagerly anticipated motor is coming to the market.

Bosch Cargo Line – a powerful setup for heavy loads

Finally, a manufacturer has recognised that the requirements of an E-Cargobike mean it needs a specific motor. After all, it’s completely normal for cars to have an engine suited to their application. The Cargo Line is a compact and powerful motor that is based on the construction of the new Performance Line CX. In this case, the modulation of the individual assistance modes has been designed specifically to match the requirements of a cargo bike. That means the ability to quickly accelerate heavy loads in the city i.e. at traffic lights, and to reliably cruise at 25 km/h. You’ll not meet all that many E-Cargobikes yet, but Bosch has also released a speed version of the motor that offers assistance up to 45 km/h.

# Bosch now also has a special motor that is tuned for the particular requirement of an E-Cargobike

The new Cargo Line (25 km/h) is approved for E-Cargobikes with a weight limit of up to 250 kg. With a maximum torque of 75 Nm and up to 400% assistance, the powerful motor takes the effort out of transporting heavy loads. The motor produces its full torque at low cadences which is especially noticeable and helpful when setting off at the lights or chugging up hills.

“E-Cargobikes are starting to make their mark on inner-city traffic. Their range of application both as private and trade vehicles is huge. With a concept developed especially for this use, we want to encourage this positive trend and contribute to reducing traffic on the roads and protect the environment. In Germany alone in 2018, 40,000 electric cargo bike were sold, which represents a growth of roughly 80% compared with the previous year” explains Claus Fleischer, Managing Director of Bosch eBike Systems.

We particularly like that the construction of this motor is the same as the Performance CX – that will make servicing much easier and prevents the spare parts list growing too long.

Bosch PowerTube 625 und 400

The market is asking for larger range and higher performance batteries. Bosch has updated its established PowerTube battery with a new battery cell configuration and increased its capacity to 625 Wh. The new battery has the same construction but measures 70 mm longer than the well-known PowerTube 500.

# ... PowerTube 400 makes a lot of sense - it could also be used as a spare battery on longer trips out

The new PowerTube 625 has a capacity of 625 Wh meaning that it can offer excellent range on hillier rides. The compact size (416 mm x 84 mm x 65 mm) as well as the weight of around 3.5 kg makes it possible to sleekly integrate the unit in the downtube. This allows eBikes to maintain their sleek and clean looks. A flat PowerTube 625 battery can be charged to 50% in 1.5 hours and take 3.7 hours to charge fully with the 6A Fast Charger. The PowerTube 625 can also be used with Bosch’s DualBattery system: connecting two batteries then delivers up to 1250 Wh capacity.

“If you’re offering eBikers new functions, features and performance as we are doing with our new Performance Line CX, then you also have to provide more range. That’s what we are doing with the new PowerTube 625. With the PowerTube 500, which we released two years ago, we set new standards for integrated batteries and this battery is now used by many manufacturers. With the PowerTube 625, we push things even further. With these two new models we offer the right type of integrated battery for every type of bike and demand” explains Claus Fleischer, Managing Director for Bosch eBike Systems.

In addition, the 400 Wh PowerTube 400 rounds out the Bosch range as the perfect choice for more affordable or E-Trekking and E-Citybikes. The compact dimensions (349 mm x 84 mm x 65 mm) and the minimalistic looks will allow for seamless integration into the design of E-Bikes. With its 400 Wh capacity, the Li-ion unit will have enough energy for daily rides in the city or smaller rides out. The low weight of 2.9 kg means the PowerTube 400 is easy to stow away in your rucksack and in turn, can be easily used as a spare battery.

SmartphoneHub – clever connectivity

“Kitchen gear, cars, lawn mowers: the Internet of things is already part and parcel of our everyday. With bikes, connectivity will inevitably be part of the future and that’s especially the case for E-Bikes: connected bikes will offer users almost unlimited possibilities. Today, we are working on mobility solutions for tomorrow – and are pushing development around the topic of Connected Biking with new products like the SmartphoneHub” explains Claus Fleischer, Managing Director of Bosch eBike Systems.

If you want to use your smartphone whilst riding, the SmartphoneHub will provide the connectivity solution that you need: attach your phone, start the COBI.Bike App, pedal away and the connected E-Bike experience begins. With a 2D or 3D map, the app reliably navigates you to your goal and if you want it can also provide audio cues too. Weather data lets you ride out into nature without encountering foul weather. Fitness enthusiasts can display key training data such as power output, cadence and calories burnt so they’re always easy to see. You can also connect a heart rate monitor via Bluetooth. Connecting fitness and health trackers such as Apple Health, Google Fit, Strava and Komoot lets you turn the SmartphoneHub into your very own personal trainer. Entertainment is also provided for: the COBI.Bike App provides you with access to music and audiobooks through services like Spotify or Audible.

The SmartphoneHub and its various functions and be controlled easily and intuitively with the separate remote, allowing your hands to stay on the bars. Thanks to the audible navigation cues, you don’t even have to look at the display whilst riding. You’re offered a lot of flexibility: keep your phone protected in your rucksack and you’ll still be able to view key data on the 1.5″ display integrated into the SmartphoneHub mount. You can also charge your phone with a USB cable from the E-Bike battery on the go. Finally, software updates for the SmartphoneHub can be done wirelessly through the COBI.Bike App.

In addition, the connected rider is offered a few other helpful features. The USB plug doesn’t only let you charge external devices but also lets your Bosch dealer connect their service device. That lets service intervals to be set and firmware updates to be made quickly and effectively. With the press of a button, the walk-assist function can be activated. For iPhone users, there is also a special smartphone case which fits onto the SmartphoneHub and charges your phone with the integrated Lightning connector.

The SmartphoneHub can be used for eBike with the Bosch Active Line and Performance Line CX from model year 2018, as well as Cargo Line, Performance Line and Performance Line CX from model year 2020. The only exceptions are the Cargo Line Speed and Performance Line Speed as well as combinations of Bosch eBike ABS, eShift or eSuspension.

Lock function – smart additional security with audible feedback

A quick stop and you just want to lean your bike up outside rather than lock it up. However, a bike thief needs just a few moments inattention to take your bike. According to police statistics, in Germany 800 bikes are stolen daily. With an expensive E-Bike that loss becomes even more of a blow, making it especially important that you secure your ride. A mechanical lock is absolutely essential, but with the premium Lock function, Bosch offers an additional digital security measure. As soon as you remove the Kiox display from your E-Bike, the motor will be deactivated.

“The fact is that digital solutions can’t replace the traditional, mechanical lock but they can provide a complement. With Lock, we have developed a function that provides the eBiker with more security and creates a bit more work for the bike thief, because it reduces the value of the E-Bike significantly” explains Claus Fleischer, Managing Director of Bosch eBike systems.

Activate the Lock function by removing the Kiox display and you won’t be able to ride with motor assistance. It’s only once you replace that same display on the mount that the electronic lock is released. That makes the E-Bike less attractive to thieves: without a working motor, it’s a lot less fun to ride and much harder to sell on.

The new Lock function offers a little more security and could deter opportunistic thieves
# The new Lock function offers a little more security and could deter opportunistic thieves - if your E-Bike is locked, the motor is deactivated and won't function

The Lock function works without a key and is easy to set up. Before you first use it, you have to purchase the Lock function through the eBike Connect smartphone app and pair it to the Kiox display you are using. Thereafter, the motor can only be activated with this display. One innovative extra is that Bosch has programmed in a sound that lets you know if you have activated or deactivated the lock when you remove or replace the display – just like the central locking on your car. A lock symbol on the display also shows when the motor is locked.

The Lock function is compatible the Bosch Active Line and Active Line Plus from 2018 as wel as Cargo Line, Peformance Line and Performance Line CX motors from 2020. Lock is available for € 9.99 and compatible with the 2020 Kiox display.

Opinion @eMTB-News.de

The new developments that Bosch has presented in Stuttgart are cohesive and will make an impact on the market. The new motor generation with its pronounced cooling fins and extremely compact dimensions impressively demonstrates where things are going. Bosch is clearly engaged with the topic of theft-proofing and connectivity and we also applaud its stance against motor tuning.

Bosch team, your portfolio is excellent and the Bosch Performance CX once again represents an absolute benchmark.

What do you think of these new developments from Bosch? What do you think of the new motor and smart features that it is offering to customers?
