Lapierre Overvolt AM 700 i Bosch tested: Lapierre release for 2018 their latest Bosch based integrated battery E-Bike. We were invited to spend time with their engineers, professional rider Nico Vouilloz and company director Gilles Lapierre to see the new Overvolt AM 700 i up-close and test ride it in one of Lapierre’s testing locations in Valberg, a few hours north of Nice. Lapierre will not just be restricting themselves to the Bosch system, they will also be diversifying into a Shimano based 29er E-Bike – here you find our first ride impressions of the Lapierre Overvolt AM 729 i Shimano. With both systems we spent time riding and testing, making sure we understood as much as we could about how the latest Lapierre eMTBs are advancing and performance is improving.

Lapierre Overvolt AM 700 i Bosch – In Brief
Good for aggressive riders – quietest Bosch bike so far …
Lapierre have taken another step forward with their Bosch integration and as of today are the first company to have a fully rideable and testable bike available for us to ride with the new Bosch Powertube integration. We rode the Bosch equipped 27.5″+ AM700i version with 160 mm of travel on one of the most epic rides we have ever done. Taking in single trails, extreme descents and long distance pedalling with a few extremely exposed cliffs. We found that the Bosch system is pretty powerful as always and benefits from the new eMTB mode giving some great traction and excellent on bike balance in mixed extreme terrain. Plus we welcomed the silent “no rattle” ride. For the Bosch riders out there we can say this is one of Nico Vouilloz’s favourite bikes. At last, a Bosch bike with no battery keys …
This is the first bike we have actually ridden with the new Bosch Powertube battery and eMTB mode installed and working together. Firstly, the integrated battery gives the bike a slim look and less industrial design – no more bolt on battery as an “afterthought”. The battery can be charged onboard through a connector on the non drive side. The motor, behind its cover, looks almost as integrated as the battery. It was a surprise to see, how well this has been done. The battery releases by way of a pin with toggle, which, when pushed, pops out and the battery slides out. Quick, no fuss and NO Keys!

Lapierre likes the larger display, we are not convinced you need it, but it’s well protected.
We found that the Intuvia display is great, if you like big numbers, etc. We are not convinced about it for gravity riders – we would have preferred the smaller Bosch Purion. However, Lapierre did include a large thick rubber bash guard to mitigate any knocks on the display. It’s also worth noting, the magnet on the wheel gets a special plastic widget to stop it from turning. We saw this on Nico’s bike a few years ago in the form of a piece of tape and screw, now it’s actually installed. Pretty useful we think, but it would be even better, if the speed sensor was on the disc. We have heard nothing from Bosch about this, but Lapierre have made their frames compatible for this adaptation.
Lapierre Overvolt AM 700 i Bosch – Hands On
Some nice design details give a great first time integration for a Bosch system.
Although this is a production ready version, Lapierre did remind us that there might be a few small tweaks to final specifications once the bike is released. The tyre compounds might be different to those we used. Apart from that what we have here is the first solid release of an integrated Bosch system. Knowing how difficult it is to get Bosch to join the high speed bike industry development train, they have actually created a system that really helps bike designers make better looking bikes right now and have the same reliability as before.
The component choices for the Lapierre Overvolt AM 700 i Bosch are pretty solid with good brakes and excellent drive cranks. We have always complained bitterly about how rubbish looking cranks have been installed on Bosch motors generally across all brands. Finally, Lapierre have put some really solid, good-looking cranks on which adds to the overall polish of the Bosch system.
We think the Lapierre Overvolt AM 700 i Bosch from a distance is very good-looking as well and perfect for those, who want to ride with a Bosch system, but were getting tired of the on frame battery. In its place, though, you can now put a water bottle, which is great for those, that want to make the most of the riding and exploring without rucksacks.
The wheel choice is interesting. We were surprised to see a Maxxis Rekon on the back, as we think it’s not aggressive enough – especially for a 160 mm travel bike, that is going to be ridden fairly hard. One feature, that highlights the idea that this bike should be ridden hard is the new chain-guide mounted to the motor, that stops chain suck in muddy conditions – a good idea.
Lapierre Overvolt AM 700 i Bosch – On The Trail
Bosch power is definitely great for those, who like to smash their way up a trail.
We rode an extreme amount of trails on our test ride, which took us out over some “red earth” behind Valberg and into the wild and exposed rocky landscape. The only way in or out is by bike or helicopter. The trails were narrow and tight and gave us a good opportunity to climb lots of different surfaces. With the 27.5″ tyres, the Lapierre Overvolt AM 700 i Bosch was less fluid on step-ups compared to their 29″ Shimano version we tried the day before. The Bosch motor has more kick to it than Shimano, despite the bike having the new eMTB mode – we were feeling tired that day and preferred turbo mode more. Although the eMTB mode gives great traction, if you are looking for a more effortless experience (which is what we prefer on Bosch systems), then stick to turbo mode.
The bike feels longer than the 29er version and is more like an enduro bike. Corners up hill are slower than the 29er, but smooth nonetheless. We liked the longer rear end for maintaining an uphill ride experience where the front end seldom lifts up. It was another example of a different opinion on bike geometry for climbing, that does work. We are not sure anyone has found the ideal length yet, but we are getting closer.
Lapierre have specified a new 11 speed shifter, that allows only one gear at a time. Shifting with SRAM GX uphill was always double tap, which meant we would prefer the SRAM EX1 system for its overall smoothness under power and shifting silence. GX works well, if slightly more noisy. Some say 8 gears are not enough, so let’s meet in the middle at 9–10 … it doesn’t feel like you need lots of gears with the Bosch system on this bike, just pedal a bit and power up things which are in the way.
More enduro like than we expected.
Our trail was not really a downhill trail, it was more up and down. Only towards the end did we have a long downhill, which gave us the chance to try the Lapierre Overvolt AM 700 i Bosch’s performance before we were shuttled back. There we could notice that the bike is stable – the lower centre of gravity compared to the 29″ Shimano version combined with 160 mm of travel gives a supple ride. It’s very capable off small drops. We loved the fact that the Bike is so very silent in rough conditions – no rattles or knocks. The weight feels a little bit better distributed (lower) as well, meaning there is more stability at speed. It’s more of an enduro bike than a trail bike, despite the fact we did more of an all mountain trail adventure.
The bike is for more enduro style riding.
The bike has to be ridden hard to get most out of it, even when cruising along. It’s a quiet bike – no rattles at all. Riding along you feel the bike has a lot in reserve. Plus size tyres are good, but you must spend time getting the pressure for the trail type right. Our test tyres were not same as production units, which will have stronger side walls. We had a few punctures on sharp rocks whilst testing in really extreme gnarly conditions (everyone did). The overall feel was that the Maxxis tyres provide good grip, though, for wetter conditions we would prefer a more grippy tyre on the rear of the bike. The Maxxis Rekon is good in the dry and for rolling fast.
The RockShox suspension is more sensitive to the air pressure settings being right compared to the Fox units on the other bike. We spend some time to get the pedalling performance and sag right. We went fairly soft at 30 percent which seemed a good compromise. The seat post control was good and easy to find as we rolled up and down a variable trail. Setting up the cockpit was simple, and we like the matchmaker style of brake and shifter combos. We didn’t have to adjust brakes or shifters on the ride, which was good – everything just worked.
The body position is fairly aggressive even when just riding along. In our opinion the geometry is good and will suit a lot of different tastes. Corners are smooth, not snappy – a feature of the rear end being longer with Bosch. Climbing on this bike is about using power in combination with good bike skills.
You can flip the rear axle spacing if you want, to adjust for different size tyres/wheels and different wheel bases (470 or 460 mm). Otherwise, play with the suspension and see what you like.
Conclusion – Lapierre Overvolt AM 700 i Bosch
Lapierre have actually made a really good bike. They are the first to have production units ready to ship to customers in September and no one is going to be disappointed. We liked the powerful ride feel the Bosch unit gives and the enduro like geometry we encountered, which gave a stable feel on descents. The bike industry is progressing quickly and for the price of this bike you now have an optimal power, look, performance ratio on a bike, that can be pushed hard and at the same time will cope well with just riding along.
