We’ve been testing the Haibike Xduro Nduro 10.0 Flyon. The “Flyon” name is reserved for the E-MTBs in Haibike’s range that are fitted with the 120 Nm strong TQ-Systems motor. We were able to thoroughly test the 180 mm travel E-Enduro bike and have ridden it on a diverse range of terrain. Is this the best Haibike of all time? We find out!

Haibike introduced the Flyon concept to the world at Eurobike 2018 and generated a lot of anticipation with its announcement. There’s hardly ever been an E-Mountainbike that has been more polarising. At the heart of this E-Enduro’s burly carbon frame is the cylindrical package of the TQ-Systems motor that is powered by a 630 Wh battery. The motor delivers a maximum torque of 120 Nm and means that this E-MTB exhibits never-before seen acceleration and uphill performance. To transfer the power to the ground, the 27.5” wheels have been shod in 2.6” Schwalbe tyres and the Fox suspension has been carefully tuned. The E-Bike is furnished with 180 mm travel front and rear. In addition, the top-end 10.0 model is equipped with an in-house developed light system with a Skybeamer front light and rear lights integrated in the seat stays.
The Haibike Xduro Nduro is available in six different variants, of which three are powered by the TQ-Systems motor. The top-of-the-range 10.0 Flyon model we tested can be yours for € 8,999.

The Haibike Xduro Nduro 10.0 Flyon was developed from scratch and comes to the table with modern geometry. In contrast to the other bikes in Haibike’s range, the Flyon has a lot of pop at the rear, very agile suspension, a lot of anti-squat and is tuned for performance. With 467 mm reach and 612 mm stack (Size L) you’ll have lots of room to move and master any situation aboard this E-MTB.
However we don’t like the high 800 mm standover (size L) of the top tube. In hairy situations, this can result in painful collisions of sensitive parts with frame when dismounting.

The Haibike Xduro Nduro is available in six configurations, three of which are equipped with the TQ 120S motor and given the “Flyon” name. The TQ 120S motor is powered by a removable 630 Wh integrated battery. The suspension is top-of-the-line kit specced with performance in mind. Up front there’s a Fox 36 Factory fork and at the rear a Fox X2 Factory shock, both of which control a generous 180 mm travel. A SRAM EX1 8-speed drivetrain does the shifting and the E-Bike rolls on durable DT Swiss wheels. Hard braking manoeuvres are easily accomplished with the Magura MT7 brakes and the grippy Schwalbe Magic Mary tyres offer plenty of grip out on the trail.

Motor & Battery
This model is fitted with the TQ-Systems motor. The round, 3.9 kg unit produces 120 Nm torque and occasionally sounds like a jet engine when in use. The motor handles high cadences very well and longer periods at peak power are no problem at all. The motor is made in Germany, but this partnership with Haibike marks the first time that it is appearing on the market in larger numbers. Both the chainring and motor cover are very eye-catching, reminding us of the rims of a race car and emphasising the high-performance focus of this unit. The Flyon bikes also feature an in-house developed display, a brand new ergonomic remote and an internal battery with a capacity of 630 Wh.

TQ-Systems’ newest development has been named the TQ 120S. The cylindrical motor is manufactured in Germany and puts out 120 Nm peak torque. The compact unit isn’t all that well known yet and currently, only two manufacturers use the system. TQ-Systems GmbH is based in Germany and produces powertrain and automation solutions along with embedded systems. The parent company, TQ-Group GmbH is based just outside Munich and 13 other locations.

The power that this motor delivers to the rear wheel is truly brutal. We’ll have to see how long the chain, cassette or tyres withstand the onslaught. Ultimate durability will likely be a question of how well the motor power is modulated by the control firmware. There are some significant differences here in terms of implementation between Haibike and M1 Sporttechnik.
Up until now, the TQ120S motor was an exotic option as it was only used by one smaller manufacturer and wasn’t particularly well distributed on the market. That should change for 2019. With the E-Bike giant Haibike choosing to equip its flagship bike with the system, there will likely be a lot more of these motors flooding the market.

The Haibike Flyon is fitted with a 630 Wh battery which has been completely integrated into the downtube. A large opening close to the motor allows you to slide the battery downward out of the downtube. The optionally available 10 A charger allows you to charge the battery extremely quickly. You can fill it to 80% capacity in just 60 minutes!
The stunning Flyon display has been developed in-house by Haibike and is a high-end, crystal clear unit that is very easy to read.
TQ-Systems helped Haibike with the development of the display. Clad in Gorilla Glass it should withstand any weather and remains legible in any weather condition. The transflective display reflects ambient light and remains easy to read even in bright light. Haibike chose a fixed display to avoid the oft-encountered problems with electrical connections on removable ones.
Haibike sees the Flyon display as the central communications hub from which the rider can get all the information they need. Be it tuning individual settings or viewing your ride data, everything happens from here.
The multi-function, intuitive remote unit was also developed in collaboration with TQ-Systems and currently represents a leading design on the market. It’s a pleasure to use with excellent ergonomics and intuitive operation. The inspiration for the remote actually came from the range of controls found in BMWs and Audis, so it’s not particularly surprising that this remote shares some key design elements such as the rotating dial/push-button that is quick and easy to use.
The buttons are clad in a tactile rubber and are pleasantly grippy. The thumb switch lets you choose the assistance mode, without having to take your hands off the bars.

Quoted figures for range tend to be on the optimistic side so we like to test bikes for ourselves, draining a whole battery and seeing how far the bike will go. For this test we managed 33.15 km and 623 metres of ascending, staying in the highest power setting throughout. Please note that these values in no way represent rigorous or normalised testing. Instead, they should be seen as ballpark figures. Using lower assistance modes increases the range significantly too.
On the trail
We’ve never had more fun on an E-Mountainbike whilst riding uphill!
One thing up front. We’ve never had as much fun riding an E-Mountainbike uphill as when we’re on the Haibike Xduro Nduro 10.0 Flyon! The motor pushes you uphill so powerfully that even the steepest slopes leave you with just one goal. “I’m going to ride up that!” And no sooner have you thought it, and you’re already there, with 120 Nm torque at your disposal to fling you up any uphill section. Technical trails are also fun to climb with the Flyon. The short cranks prevent you clipping your pedals and the burly Magic Mary tyres hardly ever lose their grip.
However, we do have to mention the high weight of the bike. You better hope that you won’t have to stop on the trail, move the bike or shift it in the right direction. You’ll need a lot of strength and be tall to heft this E-Bike because both the 28 kg weight and the high top tube makes it a bit of a challenge to move around.
Capable suspension! Plush performance!
We have to admit that we were a little apprehensive about riding such a heavy E-MTB on demanding downhill trails. However, the Flyon quickly dispelled our doubts and concerns. This E-Enduro just wants to blast the downhills and the Fox Factory suspension keeps everything in complete control. The fork and shock work in symphony and the bike can’t get enough of rough terrain. You’re centrally positioned aboard the bike and the centre of gravity is low, allowing this E-Mountainbike to change direction quickly despite its weight. The improved geometry (467 mm reach, 612 mm stack for a Size L) over older Haibike models gave us more than enough room to shift and manoeuver whilst riding. Indeed, the geometry is fantastic and completely won us over. Our only criticism is the very high top tube.
“Crazy! You’re always riding at the 25 km/h limit on this thing!”
180 mm travel is quite a lot of (and possibly too much) travel for normal trails. Long travel suspension has a tendency to bob and only comes into its own on rougher terrain. You’ll see this class of E-Bike out in the wild, but we can’t help but think that it’s overkill for many situations. However, back to the Haibike Xduro Nduro 10.0 Flyon with its powerful motor. The power curve and modulation of the motor are fantastic and make for a lot of enjoyment out riding. The plush Fox Factory suspension sits high in its travel, offering a lot of pop with good feedback and it feels agile and lively. In addition, the suspension kinematics have been designed with a lot of anti-squat to ensure that the rider is supported when accelerating out of corners. Anti-squat is how resistant the suspension is to compressing under acceleration. In the real world, the design results in an E-MTB that feels taut and supportive when accelerating and can be ridden very smoothly.
If you prefer a whisper-quiet ride, we have to warn you that the Flyon motor generates quite a lot of noise. Once you’re used to it, the whirring of the motor is quite reassuring, but if you’re not expecting it, it might get quite annoying. It’s on uphill sections, when the motor is providing maximum assistance at a high cadence, that it’s particularly loud. At a cadence of 130 rpm it sounds like you’re sitting astride a small jet engine.
The Flyon is a lot of fun but you’ll need to be careful because in the most powerful assistance mode, you’ll very quickly run out of juice.
- Power modulation While we don’t necessarily need five different assistance modes, each one has been perfectly tuned by the teams at Haibike and TQ-Systems. Even in the highest mode, the motor is well-mannered and nicely modulated. We really have to praise the team!
- Extremely high standover The bend in the top tube is a design element and nothing more. We have to ask whether it’s really necessary. It means that the standover is higher than it needs to be and makes it almost impossible to get off this E-Bike without getting caught on something. Unless you’re on completely flat ground, it seems likely that you’ll end up with a top tube all up in your nether regions. When will the bend in the top tube be laid to rest?
- Tyres tend to collapse Such a heavy E-Mountainbike needs reinforced tyres. We would like to see the Schwalbe Magic Mary tyres specced with the SG casing. This would lend the tyres more stability and would stop them folding over when cornering hard.
- High weight Whilst everywhere else E-MTB weights are finally falling, Haibike’s Flyon bucks the trend. With a weight of just under 28 kg, this E-MTB is one of the heaviest on the market. Whilst it’s fine for riding on the trails, be warned if you have to lift or heft this bike anywhere… your ride could turn from a relaxing cruise to a full-on gym session.
- Lighting and overall concept It’s important to improve safety and that’s exactly where the Flyon concept is in a class of its own. The light system consisting of the Skybeamer headlight and the integrated rear light goes in the right direction, and we haven’t seen anything like it anywhere else. Super!

The Haibike Xduro Nduro 10.0 Flyon is a mature E-Enduro that offers its riders lots of power and technology. The modulation and power delivery of the motor is impressive, and the concept is successfully executed. You never have the feeling that the 120 Nm torque is too much or overwhelming. The motor is noticeably powerful but always remains well mannered. The transition above the assistance limit is also very smooth. We must praise the team involved in the development of the system. The overall concept is coherent and thoroughly thought through, from head tube to dropouts. We’ve never had as much fun on the uphills as on the Haibike Xduro Nduro 10.0 Flyon!
Our major criticism is the high weight. Once the Flyon gets going, it keeps on rolling and it feels incredibly planted on the trail. However delicate manoeuvres or even lifting this bike will be a bit more of a challenge… You’ll need a lot of strength in order to be able to heft this E-Bike.
Last, but not least. The Flyon represents perhaps not the lightest, but no doubt the best Haibike of all time! If you’re looking for power, a carbon frame, great suspension, the newest technologies, a smart light system, diligent detailing and just a little something more, then we can absolutely recommend this model to you.

About the test
On our test runs, we usually stay in the highest assistance mode and drain the battery completely at least once. We then publish our results on our Strava account.
