We’ve had a BH Atom-X Carbon in for review. The design of the Atom-X is polarising and goes its own way. The Spanish brand has now presented a new E-Bike with a stiff carbon frame, in rather racy colours. We’ve had the chance to test the new Atom-X Carbon out on the trail. You can find all the details of this new model and read our exclusive review here.

When the Spanish brand BH Bikes presented the Atom-X in Summer 2017, it caused quite a stir. Fitted with a Brose Drive S motor and a proprietary battery with a 720 Wh capacity, this model sent a clear signal to the industry. The construction was completely new and this type of battery integration hadn’t been seen before, but the E-Bike undoubtedly divided opinion with its looks. Our first test of the BH Atom-X Lynx 6 at the beginning of 2018 in Malaga convinced us that the engineers of this E-MTB had created a comfortable E-Trailbike with excellent handling.

Now the brand has introduced the carbon version of the Atom-X – the design of which stays true to the original – and are offering it in two specs. The voluminous carbon frame is stiffer than the aluminium version and the well-considered looks are balanced and flowing. This model also uses the same large, integrated 720 Wh battery which can be removed via an opening in the top tube.

The BH Atom-X Carbon is available in two travel incarnations, namely with 140/135 mm travel or with 160/150 mm travel. The shorter travel version is denoted “Lynx 5.5”, the longer travel one as “Lynx 6”. Altogether, there are 6 different component specs available with prices starting at € 5999.90 – the model we tested comes in at € 6999.90.

Geometry

The BH Atom-X Carbon Lynx 6 has a reach of 450 mm and a 625 mm stack, meaning it stays in the realm of comfort-oriented E-Trailbikes. The 463 mm chainstays mean uphills aren’t a problem and that also helps provide a nice amount of riding stability. In comparison with the aluminium version, the new carbon models have slackened the head angle by 1°. Tight corners and trails shouldn’t be a problem with a 66° head angle though. The E-Bike is available in sizes M, L and XL and the medium we tested weighs in at just under 23 kg.

Components

The BH Atom-X Carbon is available in 6 different builds and comes with either 140/130 mm or 160/150 mm travel. The Atom-X Carbon Lynx 6 Pro XT11 we tested is fitted with Fox suspension with a Fox 36 FLOAT Performance up front and a Fox FLOAT DPS Performance shock at the rear. The 11-speed drivetrain consists of a mix of Shimano parts, with Shimano SLX shifters and Shimano XT gears. Braking is taken care of by Shimano SLX brakes with 200 mm rotors. The fitted Kind Shock ETEN-I dropper post only has 100 mm travel which is far too little for a modern E-Mountain bike. The colour-matched 27.5” wheels are shod in Schwalbe Magic Mary plus tyres which pretty much guarantee good grip and traction. The 780 mm bars provide more than enough leverage for steering and ergonomic Ergon grips complete the package.

Motor & Battery

The Brose Drive S Mag – the most recent development from Brose – offers a convincing ride on the trail. With 90 Nm nominal torque it pushes on powerfully without feeling loutish or unruly. The assistance is smooth and consistent, though definitely noticeable. The compact motor is a little louder than its sibling the Brose Drive S Alu , but it’s still more than acceptable. The 2.9 kg motor produces 90 Nm torque and offers up to 410% assistance – a level of support that is quite noticeable out on the trail. The little powerhouse pushes you up steep uphill sections effortlessly. Above the 25 km/h assistance limit this motor is also great. The motor decouples completely meaning there’s absolutely no resistance to pedalling.

Heart of this E-Bike is the Brose Drive S Mag motor
# Heart of this E-Bike is the Brose Drive S Mag motor - the magnesium casing makes this model lighter than others on the market

A particular highlight of the BH Atom-X Carbon is the large 720 Wh battery! The battery is inserted into the frame from the top, a detail which explains the unique design of the frame. Riding frugally and in perfect conditions (wind, tyre pressure, ascending), it should be possible to achieve ranges of up to 100 km. The battery was developed by BH-Bike and given its large capacity, is relatively compact compared to its competitors.

We’ve seen the display fitted to the BH Atom-X Carbon before. It offers nicely saturated colours, high contrast, is easy to read and, apart from its exposed position, offers excellent performance in the real world. This small computer also allows you to tune the assistance levels and characteristics to your personal preference. While the exposed position of the display is a bit of a misstep, we love the sharp, bright display. It effectively communicates the most important data that you’ll need whilst out riding. The different support levels – Eco 30% (green), Eco+ 50% (blue), Sport 70% (orange) and Boost 100% (red) – are indicated by colour and the remote also vibrates in response to switching mode.

If you use the Ebikemotion App, you can connect your smartphone to the display via Bluetooth, allowing you to navigate with the display, and get vibrating notification via the remote when your mum sends you a funny video on WhatsApp.

Real-world range

49,11 km / 1.060 metres vertical

Quoted figures for range tend to be on the optimistic side so we like to test bikes for ourselves, draining a whole battery and seeing how far the bike will go. For this test we managed 49.11 km and 1060 metres of ascending, staying in the highest power setting throughout. Please note that these values in no way represent rigorous or normalised testing. Instead, they should be seen as ballpark figures. Using lower assistance modes increases the range significantly too.

You can find the exact details of our test ride with the BH Atom-X Carbon here.

On the trail

Uphill

Lots of power and longs chainstays – time to go up!

The stiff carbon frame of the BH Atom-X is completely at home on steep terrain. The 465 mm chainstays and the powerful assistance of the vertically positioned Brose Drive S Mag motor means this bike is a veritable mountain goat. The upright and central position means you’ll always have an overview of the terrain ahead. We climb sharp ascents and loose terrain effortlessly and the Schwalbe Magic Mary tyres always provide lots of traction. On the uphills, the fat plus tyres are perfect, on the downhills they become a bit of a hinderance…

Steep ramps are easy to climb
# Steep ramps are easy to climb

Downhill

Man, this new carbon frame is stiff and holds its line very well. Rough downhill sections are swallowed up by the Fox suspension and can be ridden at speed – we like the handling of this E-MTB a lot. The relatively low weight of 23kg means the Atom-X is also easy to manoeuvre. The weight distribution is well considered, with the central position of the battery leading to a centre of gravity that plants this e-bike squarely on the trail.

It’s only the tyres that sap some of the fun. The tyres are undoubtedly great for uphills, but they held us back when going down again. The wide plus tyres are spongy and can be steered neither quickly nor precisely across demanding trails. The only thing we could do was increase the pressure, taking away all the advantage that the larger tyres offer in the first place.

Challenging terrain
# Challenging terrain - thanks to the capable Fox suspension and the even weight distribution, it poses no problems at all

Trail

Comfortable und long-lasting fun!

The Brose Drive S Mag motor provides the BH Atom-X Carbon with excellent riding characteristics. The motor provides powerful, silent assistance on the trail. There’s plenty of power available to push us out of the corners and swoop up short inclines. The riding position is comfortable and not too aggressive, and the 720 Wh battery lets us go for extended rides and expeditions with ease. We’re not talking about easy riding on forest tracks here, we’re talking about extended rides on demanding trails and rough terrain. 720 Wh provides more than enough juice for rides over 50 km without having to ride frugally but staying on the highest assistance mode instead. That’s quite nice!

We were a bit disappointed by the short travel of the dropper. If you’re using it out on the trail, you’ll quickly become frustrated that it only has 100 mm travel.

BH Bikes has managed to create a moden E-Trailbike with the Atom-X Carbon
# BH Bikes has managed to create a moden E-Trailbike with the Atom-X Carbon - it really puts a smile on your face

We noticed:

  • Short travel dropper post Modern E-MTBs need droppers. However, the Kind Shock ETEN-I dropper fitted here has a tiny 100mm of travel and stopped working properly after our first ride. We’d like to see something else fitted, preferably with at least 150 mm travel.
  • Spongy plus tyres Narrower tyres would noticeably improve the riding experience. With 2.6” tyres, the Atom-X Carbon would be a lot more agile and sprightly. The 2.85” tyres fitted as standard should be removed and replaced as soon as possible.
  • Shimano SLX brakes The brakes work well, but for a bike that costs this much we’d expect to see something else. We would like to see more premium brakes fitted.
With 100 mm travel, the dropper post clearly has too little travel

Summary: BH Atom-X Carbon

„Futuristic & brave!

A well thought-out concept.“ Rico Haase

The stiff carbon frame of the BH Atom-X Carbon provides a solid ride and great handling. Paired with the powerful Brose Drive S Mag motor, you’ve got an incredibly dynamic E-Trailbike. The fully integrated 720 Wh battery makes long rides possible and, in our view,, that increased capacity is a step in the right direction. More battery does mean more weight, and we hope to see that reduced in the future.

If you’re looking for a quality carbon frame, unique design, comfortable geometry and a dynamic ride, then we can absolutely recommend the BH Bikes Atom-X Carbon to you.

About the test

Please expand for details

On our test runs we usually stay in the highest assistance mode and drain the battery completely at least once. We then publish our results on our Strava account.

Our loop has everything we need to test what our E-bikes are capable of:

  • Tight uphill trails with roots, rocks and loam
  • Flat trails with small climbing sections
  • Fast and flowing downhills
  • Long gravel trails up- and downhill

E-bikes are subjected to our route multiple times to allow us to draw our conclusions.

We tested the BH Atom-X Carbon here:

  • Bamber/Bad Kreuznach, Germany: The riding provides narrow and tight trails with rooty, rocky sections, steep and technical uphills as well as flowing downhills.

I ride everything: E-Enduro, E-Trailbikes, hardtails, downhill, road – I enjoy it all, whether it’s E-assisted or not. I’ll admit that I do quite like having a motor on the uphills though. There’s lots to love about flowing trails; natural or built. The only thing I hate – switchbacks.
