We’ve taken a look at the updated Pivot Shuttle and spent some time testing it. The American manufacturer has updated its E-Trailbike and has equipped the new model with 29” wheels, as well as offering an additional model in the lineup. We have had the exclusive test of the new top-end model and have all the details for you here.

With the Shuttle, Pivot offers an incredibly capable E-Mountainbike. The first generation was met with much acclaim in 2017 and at the time – we have a full review of the 27.5” + Pivot Shuttle here – there was a clearly defined goal: to offer an E-Bike that weighs under 20 kg, which the engineers managed for Size M by a whisker. Now, the updates to the new model see an E-Bike that rolls on 29” wheels as standard. The E-Bike keeps the Shimano Steps motor with an internal 500 Wh battery, its neutral DW-link suspension kinematics and the high-end Fox suspension. Some new features include the quick release battery, which now has two fewer screws to undo for access. Pricing starts at € 7,899, but the “Team” model that we tested goes for the princely sum of € 10,499.
The new frame, for which Pivot offers a 10-year guarantee, is a high-quality, stiff, carbon item. The front triangle is identical to last year’s model, but the rear end has seen some changes as both the Race and Team models are now delivered with 29” wheels from the factory. If you’re a fan of plus tyres there’s no need to worry as there’s still enough space to mount 27.5”+ wheels. The dropouts stay true to Pivot’s own 157 mm Super Boost standard, which is intended to improve the stiffness of the rear wheel.

The geometry is almost identical to that of last year’s Shuttle – the chainstays have been adjusted for 29” wheels and the head angle is 0.5° slacker, but reach and stack remain the same. Pivot offers the Shuttle in four frame sizes. The geometry is up-to-date and promises playful handling. With 459 mm reach and 625 mm stack for a Size L, the Pivot isn’t the longest bike out there but offers more than enough space to manoeuvre aboard the bike whilst riding. The short 438 mm chainstays should ensure that the Pivot Shuttle is a cornering demon.

The Pivot Shuttle is available in two configurations, though we had the top-of-the-range Team model on test here. On our model, the gearing was shifted with a precise mechanical Shimano XTR drivetrain and shifter. The Fox Factory suspension provides optimal traction and the Kashima coating guarantees plush and sensitive performance. Up front, there’s 160 mm travel and at the rear, 140 mm travel is controlled by a Fox DPX2 shock which has a custom tune for a more progressive curve. The significant update for this year is that the Pivot Shuttle now rolls out of the factory on 29” wheels from DT Swiss. The package is finished off with a quality Fox Transfer dropper post and a lustrous matt 760 mm carbon bar.

Motor & Battery
Pivot furnishes its top-end model with the powerful 70 Nm Shimano Steps E8000 motor. In the lower end “Race” model, the brand has opted for the weaker Shimano Steps E7000 motor instead. An interesting feature on this E-MTB is that the normal 504 Wh Shimano battery, which is intended to be fitted externally, has been completely integrated into the downtube. This creates a tidy and modern look and helps lower the centre of gravity. That means that the Pivot Shuttle package doesn’t only look extremely good, it’s also very well balanced.

The Shimano Steps E8000 motor was introduced in 2016 and since then has started popping up on more and more E-Bikes. The 2.8kg motor is one of the lighter options available and together with the ergonomic controls, it’s an intuitive system to use. Along with its stellar performance, the popularity of the Shimano motor is likely also due to its small volume. The compact form frees up the design of the frame allowing agile geometries and kinematics to be engineered. Chainstays don’t have to be excessively long because cranks are mounted fairly centrally in the motor unit, meaning that the dimensions are usually similar to a non-motorised bike. Finally, the 175mm Q-factor is narrower than many competitors on the market.
Three assistance modes – ECO, TRAIL and BOOST – cover all eventualities during your rides. ECO reduces the power, but you’ll get increased range. The dynamic TRAIL mode modulates the assistance up to 60% of the maximum power, depending on what’s required. Software analyses your pedal strokes to determine how much assistance is required at any given moment. Pedalling in this mode feels particularly natural and the mode offers a good compromise between support and range. BOOST puts the pedal to the metal and always delivers the maximum available power. The Shimano Steps E8000 delivers a maximum 70Nm torque and we have never experienced any problems with overheating.
The display can only be described in one way – excellent. The unit is small, robust, well finished and mounted in a protected place just behind the bars. That’s how it should be! Wherever you’re riding, the high contrast and high saturation LCD panel is easy to read and understand. The display tells you which gear you are in and colour codes the different assistance modes to let you know which you are using. Using Bluetooth and a companion smartphone app you can adjust settings to your taste. If you want to know your cadence – you even can show that on the display. The combination of a compact motor, powerful assistance and the brilliant display makes the Shimano Steps system one to look out for if you’re in the market for an E-Bike.

Quoted figures for range tend to be on the optimistic side so we like to test bikes for ourselves, draining a whole battery and seeing how far the bike will go. For this test we managed 34.19 km and 720 metres of ascending, staying in the highest power setting throughout. Please note that these values in no way represent rigorous or normalised testing. Instead, they should be seen as ballpark figures. Using lower assistance modes increases the range significantly too.
On the trail
When it gets steep, the front wheel starts lifting.
As is to be expected, the large 29” wheels mean that the Pivot Shuttle rolls over almost anything on the way uphill. The Shimano motor pushes strongly and the grippy profile of the Maxxis DHR tyre means it rarely slips out at the rear. As a result of the high front end and the short chainstays, the E-Bike unavoidably requires you to shift your weight forwards on steeper ramps. However, encounter steps and rougher terrain on those uphills and the front wheel has a tendency to lift, meaning you’ll often have to dismount and push.
“What, only 140 mm at the rear?
Weighing in at just over 20kg, the Pivot Shuttle is a real trail rocket. Nothing is too fast or rough for this E-MTB. The high front-end offers a feeling of security and the plush rear end takes the biggest hits in its stride. Going by the numbers, the Pivot Shuttle “only” has 140 mm travel at the back, but in practice, it feels like much more. You’re always left feeling that you have bottomless travel, with the Fox Factory suspension offering plush performance that smooths out the roughest downhill sections.
The pronounced tread of Maxxis DHF up front and DHR at the rear offers incredible amounts of grip and the tyres can be ridden at low pressures without any issues. Combined with the sturdy DT Swiss 1535 EB wheels, you’re left with an extremely fast 29” E-Mountainbike that constantly craves improving its lap times.
The stiff carbon frame doesn’t just make this E-MTB look first class, it also has some clear advantages on the trail. The low weight is noticeable while riding, allowing for fast direction changes, making throwing the bike around easy and turning the Pivot into a cornering demon. The DW-link suspension remains neutral when pedalling, making sprinting a true delight on this E-Bike as well.
Thanks to the comfortable grips and the 760 mm carbon bars, you can keep everything comfortably in hand and remain in complete control on every part of the trail.
- Small 180 mm rotor E-Mountainbikes shouldn’t be fitted with rotors under 200 mm. The negligible increase in weight of a large rotor is more than balanced by the improved performance and safety of braking. We would like to see 200 mm front and rear.
- Shimano XT brakes There’s no doubt that XT brakes are very good, but on an E-MTB in this price range, we expect top-end options from Shimano. We would like to see Saint or XTR brakes here.
- Shimano motor remote The compact SW-E7000-R remote is easy to use, unobtrusive and lets you change assistance modes quickly.
- Fiddly battery mount Whilst the new quick release system has eliminated two screws, there are still 8 more fiddly screws to remove if you want to swap or remove the battery. We would like to see a smarter solution here.
- Comfortable grips We have to praise the grips which provide a secure and comfortable hold.
Summary: Pivot Shuttle Team
If you’re looking for a lightweight 29” E-Mountainbike and would like something unique, then you’ll be well served by the Pivot Shuttle. This E-MTB convinces with its agile handling and rolls playfully and comfortably over every trail. The pretty carbon frame is stiff, well finished and nigh-on flawless. The 29” wheels suit the Shuttle very well – whilst the performance has improved over last year’s model, we also think that they look more dynamic and purposeful. The E-MTB has a quicker and more spritely feel to it and has matured from the previous model with its clunky 27.5”+ tyres. While the rear might only have a nominal 140 mm travel, it always feels like you have more on offer and even on the most demanding trails, we never felt like we were missing any.
In all honesty, were it not for the astronomical price tag, then the Pivot Shuttle would be right at the top of our wish list.

About the test
On our test runs, we usually stay in the highest assistance mode and drain the battery completely at least once. We then publish our results on our Strava account.
Our loop has everything we need to test what our E-bikes are capable of:
