We’ve been riding the Specialized Kenevo FSR Expert. This is an E-Freeride bike that we just couldn’t leave off our list. The exotic Öhlins coil shock, fat 2.8” tyres and distinctive looks marks the Kenevo as Specialized’s own. But how does this E-Bike handle the roughest of trails? We did some thorough testing to find out.

The star of the show shines brightly in its resplendent paint job.

The Specialized Kenevo FSR Expert exudes a certain class. It looks capable of handling anything from large jumps, tricks and technical terrain, to relaxed long days out, to blasting it through the bikepark. The colourful paint job is distinctive and leads to the immediate and crucial question of which riding outfit will match it best.

The Öhlins TTX22M coil shock is a distinctive component choice. Coil sprung shocks remain a relative rarity, but have some significant advantages. They may add a little weight, but the improved traction and sensitivity more than makes up for that and are immediately noticeable whilst out riding. Up front there’s a RockShox Lyrik RCT3, which we know and love from many previous test rides.

The Kenevo uses the same motor as the Levo, namely a Turbo 1.3 made by Brose. The system focusses on creating as natural feeling a ride as possible.

The rest of the components emphasise toughness and durability. The wide Roval Traverse wheels are fitted with 2.8” Butcher tyres. Stopping is taken care of by the powerful SRAM Code R brakes and the cockpit is Specialized’s own. One interesting addition is the house-brand Wu dropper post, that automatically tilts your saddle back as you lower it. Read on to find out how we got on with the Kenevo.

Motor & Battery

The high quality motor comes from Brose in Germany
# The high quality motor comes from Brose in Germany - it's near-silent and decouples completely above the 25 km/h limit

No display? So what?

The heart of the Specialized Kenevo is the Brose motor and battery. The Brose system provides silent support up to the 25km/h limit, above which it is completely decoupled and doesn’t add noticeable drag to your pedalling. The current generation provides a healthy amount of torque when you need to accelerate. That’s perfect for corners, where it can provide a hefty push to get you back up to speed. Despite the power on offer, the Kenevo never feels like an E-Motorbike. That ‘natural’ bike-like feeling is a key part of the DNA of this bike. The assistance modes can be selected with a small remote unit on your bars and with the Mission Control app, it’s possible to customise the characteristics of the individual modes to suit your personal preference.

Durch die schlanke Bauform, wirkt der Akku extrem integriert
# Durch die schlanke Bauform, wirkt der Akku extrem integriert

The downtube houses the slim 504Wh capacity battery very neatly. Ignoring he motor, you’d be hard-pressed to tell that this is an E-Bike at first glance. The battery can be removed with a single bolt — this is the kind of simple solution that we like to see! We really have to commend Specialized for such a simple but effective design.

Kann man etwas perfekt machen?
# Kann man etwas perfekt machen? - Ja, bei Specialized schon. Die Remote-Einheit passt einfach.

There’s no display on the Specialized Kenevo FSR Expert. Whilst you might miss some information, we do feel it’s nice to have uncluttered bars and the space to mount your own bike computer.

Real-world Range

Range test with the Specialized Kenevo FSR Expert
# Range test with the Specialized Kenevo FSR Expert - 32 km | 772 metres vertical

32 km / 772 metres vertical ascent
1 h 18 min

Quoted figures for range tend to be on the optimistic side so we like to test bikes for ourselves, draining a whole battery and seeing how far the bike will go. For this test we managed 32km and 772 metres of ascending, staying in the highest power setting throughout. Please note that these values in no way represent rigorous or normalised testing, instead they should be seen as ballpark figures. Using lower assistance modes increases the range significantly too.

Here are the exact details of our test ride with the Specialized Kenevo FSR Expert.

On the Trail

Uphill

Steep uphill require some weight over the front wheel
# Steep uphill require some weight over the front wheel

Fun on the up as well!

Uphills are huge amounts of fun aboard the Specialized Kenevo FSR Expert. The motor provides enough assistance to get up even the most technical of climbs. We tend to stay in Trail mode most of the time and if it does get too steep it’s easy enough to switch to Boost mode to get the maximum assistance. That provides a huge boost of power and you’ll need to pay attention that you don’t overshoot the next tight corner. The grip provided by the wide Butcher tyres is an absolute blessing on the way up making it unlikely that you’ll ever loose traction.

Even in choppy terrain, the short 165mm cranks make it possible to ride through without any pedal strike. That lets you maintain your flow and just get on with the riding.

Downhill

Our tester goes big and teaches the Specialized Kenevo FSR Expert how to fly

# Roots and rougher terrain are easy to glide over at these speeds

# The tyres have tonnes of grip even in wet conditions
The suspension just smoothes everything out
# The suspension just smoothes everything out

Downhill at warp speed.

Downhill? That’s what the Kenevo is made for. Modern geometry (455mm reach in Size L) and an upright position make this a beast for going downhill. Just a few pedal strokes in and you’ll realise that this is a bike made for going fast. Not just fast, very fast! Thanks to the inherent weight of an E-Bike, and the fitted suspension — the RockShox Lyrik RCT3 forks and particularly the Öhlins TTX22M coil shock — the Kenevo stays completely planted and feels like it can just blast its way through anything. Even on unknown sections of trail you have the confidence to keep on going full speed ahead regardless of drops, bumps or jumps you encounter. The suspension provides excellent performance: the highly adjustable fork and adjustable high speed compression of the shock means everything can be tuned to your preference. The sensitive coil shock swallows any and all bumps and is extremely sensitive to smaller inputs as well. That’s always the case with coil shocks as they don’t have to overcome the stiction of the seals in an air-sprung unit.

The powerful SRAM Code brakes provide effective braking for the 24 kg weight of this eMTB and the tilted Wu droppered saddle lets you stay in control at all times.

Unfortunately, the fat plus tyres remove some enjoyment due to their imprecise nature. If you’re blasting down the trail you need the right kind of tyre, namely one with grip and steering accuracy. It’s exactly the latter that we often find missing with such voluminous rubber.

Trail

A bit of braking, spot the trail, and away we go again
# A bit of braking, spot the trail, and away we go again

The Kenevo is right at home on the trail.

On the trail we spur the Kenevo on and give it the reins. Push it round corners, squeeze through tight gaps, accelerate away and then go out for another quick loop — this eMTB brings a whole new realm of fun to your trails. Thanks to the lockout on the fork and adjustable shock this bike is also more than happy to sprint without bobbing all over the place.

We imagine leisurely riding or going down to the pub isn’t what Specialized had anticipated this bike would be used for, but we have to say it’s a lot of fun for that too!

We noticed

  • Plus tyres – plus tyres can be an advantage for some riders, but if there’s one thing we would change on the Kenevo it’s the tyres. A slightly narrower 2.6-inch tyre and this E-Bike would be a whole lot more agile, precise and lively.

eMTB-News Summary: Specialized Kenevo FSR Expert

The Specialized Kenevo FSR Expert is a winner in the brand's range
# The Specialized Kenevo FSR Expert is a winner in the brand's range

The Specialized Kenevo FSR Expert wins lots of points with us regardless of whether it’s on looks, suspension, geometry, ride quality, components or anything else.

As we often find, there’s the typical “sit and feel at home” feeling inherent to Specialized. The Kenevo is a solid eMTB that with its 180mm travel makes the most extreme trails a pleasure to ride. The sensitive Öhlins coil tracks the ground incredibly well and provides huge amounts of traction and feeling – we love it.

It’s rare that our testers have agreed so unanimously on an eMTB — but the Specialized Kenevo FSR Expert has to be the E-Freeride bike of the year!

About the test

Please expand for more details

On our test runs we usually stay in the highest assistance mode and drain the battery completely at least once. We then publish our results on our Strava account.

Our loop has everything we need to test what our E-bikes are capable of:

  • Tight uphill trails with roots, rocks and loam
  • Flat trails with small climbing sections
  • Fast and flowing downhills
  • Long gravel trails up- and downhill

E-bikes are subjected to our route multiple times to allow us to draw our conclusions.

We tested the Specialized Kenevo FSR Expert here:

  • On the trails around Bamberg and Bad Kreuznach, Germany. The riding provides narrow and tight trails with technical rooty, rocky sections, steep and technical uphills as well as flowing downhills. In Spain the trails featured large rock garden and sandy terrain.

E-Enduro, E-Trailbike, Hardtail, Downhiller, Rennrad – mir macht jedes Bike Spaß.
I ride everything: E-Enduro, E-Trailbikes, hardtails, downhill, road – I enjoy it all, whether it’s E-assisted or not. I’ll admit that I do quite like having a motor on the uphills though. There’s lots to love about flowing trails; natural or built. The only thing I hate – switchbacks.

I like to ride Enduro, Downhill, Dirtjump, E-Enduro and Crosser – I have fun on every bike. My primary concern is to go fast on downhills – whether in the bike park or on self-climbed trails. E-biking is new for me, but it’s also super fun. Unmatched fun factor for me is only in races. You can find me at most enduro and downhill mass start races. Pulling off on every small edge and maneuvering the bike in oblique positions is just as good for me.
