KTM eMTBs for 2018: The Austrian big-hitter KTM (we visited them a while back too) has just exhibited its new range for 2018 of eMountainbikes at the Eurobike Media Days in Kronplatz, Italy. The biggest and most obvious update from 2017 – the new integrated Bosch PowerTube batteries that allow a significantly cleaner aesthetic and more traditional mountain bike-like look.

KTM Macina Kapoho 2018

The KTM Macina Kapoho is a 160mm travel, all-mountain eMTB with a difference. The front is fitted with a 29” wheel whilst you’ll find a 27.5”+ at the back. KTM are calling this “DiMMix” (Dimensions Mix) – with their motorcycle heritage, KTM are taking inspiration for this from the “wheel-mullet” used in motocross. KTM claim that this setup gives the best of both worlds.

Further updates: as we have seen across the board, the new integrated Bosch PowerTube batteries are also being used here. They allow for a significantly cleaner design and win back people with more traditionally bike-like lines. The Kapoho uses the Bosch Performance CX Motor.

First Ride: how does the KTM Macina Kapoho perform on different wheel sizes?

Though we took the lift up to get there, we tested the bike on the legendary Herrensteig MTB Trail. At 8.6km long and with 1300m of descent it is one of the longest man-made trails in South Tyrol. The riding is breathtaking – whilst it’s not technically challenging, this is a spectacular trail that is huge fun to ride. This stunning trail is where we got to test the KTM Macina Kapoho. Thanks to the e-bike specific Fox 36 and Fox shock we had absolutely no troubles with the suspension.

We did a bit of fettling before hitting the trails, this is where the Fox components proved themselves to be extremely capable with minimal adjustments– the fork in particular was incredibly precise and flex-free. Of course, unique to this eMTB are the different wheel sizes front and rear. At the front the bike has a 29”, 30mm rim setup, whilst out back it’s a 27.5” and 35mm wide rim, paired with a high volume plus tire. The wheels are both DT Swiss and e-bike specific. We’ve actually been testing this kind of combination ourselves, so we weren’t totally surprised by how it felt. The two wheel sizes gel very well, improving stability and durability as well as manoeuvrability and steering precision. We don’t want to navel-gaze too much, but we think that you’ll be seeing this from other manufacturers in the future.

KTM Macina Flite 2018

The Macina Flite uses almost the same frame as the Macina Gran and is well-suited as a speedy commuter. Clean lines are achieved with the integrated battery, internal cable routing and the subtle black finish. The optional “Street-version” comes with necessary equipment to meet German StVZO requirements (road traffic regulations that dictate the requirements for bikes on the road) including mudguards. The big-brother, the Macina Gran uses a Nexus hub gear instead.
