A good-looking frame.

It’s hard to understate the importance of the Haibike Nduro, an 180mm travel E-Bike that basically defined the category of E-Freeriders when it was introduced. It’s been around for almost 5 years and is likely the most popular E-bike in Haibike’s range.

The latest generation of the XDURO Nduro 10.0 features a fully-integrated battery and powerful Bosch Performance CX motor. It has a subtle silver-black paint job with yellow highlights. A cursory glance suggests that the spec looks right and closer inspection confirms it. The components, 2.6” Schwalbe tyres, sturdy DT Swiss FR1980 wheels, RockShox suspension, Magura MT7 brakes with HC lever, crisp 8-speed SRAM EX1 drivetrain and own-brand cockpit are well suited to an E-Freeride build.

Despite the integrated battery, Haibike has stuck with its established SES and Gravity Casing technology. The latter is a single cast piece that integrates the Bosch motor into the frame. SES – Sprocket Equalizing System — is an idler pulley on the same axis as the suspension pivot intended to isolate pedalling forces from the suspension. It also doubles up as a chain guide keep things neat and tidy.

Motor & Battery

Bosch Performance CX
# Bosch Performance CX - protected by its skid plate

Bosch power for some uphill fun.

This E-Bike is equipped with the stalwart Bosch Performance CX motor. This motor is probably the most commonly found on E-Mountainbikes today and with good reason. It has huge amounts of power on offer when you put it in Turbo mode – a maximum torque of 75Nm means it’s one of the strongest motors on the market. A unique feature of the motor is the tiny chainring, that turns 2.5-times as fast as you are pedalling. That means a 16-tooth chainring corresponds to approximately a 40-tooth in ‘pedalling terms’.

The motor has four assistance levels. Along with the standard ECO, Tour and Turbo mode, Bosch provides the brilliant eMTB mode. This progressive mode varies the power output based on how hard you are pedalling and how much effort you are putting in. The eMTB mode ranges from the 120% assistance of Tour mode, to the 300% assistance of Turbo mode. That large dynamic range makes it suitable for most everyday riding. The motor is also very good at detecting changes in rider input and adjusting the corresponding power output from the motor effectively. On steep uphills, you get the full brunt of the motor power when you pedal hard, and on flatter section the motor dials it down when you’re cruising along. Overall that provides a system that allows you to ride with grip, traction and the right support from the motor at all times — Bosch marketing speak calls it “Optimized Trail Control”.

Mehr Display braucht ein E-Freerider nicht
# Mehr Display braucht ein E-Freerider nicht - Bosch Purion Display

Bosch offers three different display options for its motor. This bike is fitted with the smallest Bosch Purion display. For us, this is by far the best Bosch display because it’s easy to read, protected from damage and simple to use. We do feel that Bosch could do some work on the vague actuation point of the buttons though.

Real-world Range

Range test with the Haibike XDURO Nduro 10.0

40,2 km / 956 vertical metres ascent
1 h 39 min

Quoted figures for range tend to be on the optimistic side so we like to test bikes for ourselves, draining a whole battery and seeing how far the bike will go. For this test we managed 40.2 km and 956 metres of ascending, staying in the highest power setting throughout. Please note that these values in no way represent rigorous or normalised testing, instead they should be seen as ballpark figures. Using lower assistance modes increases the range significantly too.

You can find the details of our range test with the Haibike XDURO Nduro 10.0 here.

On the Trail

Uphill

The Haibike XDURO Nduro is king on ascents
# The Haibike XDURO Nduro is king on ascents

“Awesome. Let’s ride up again!”

Time and again we find a long wheelbase makes climbs easier. That’s the same here and the Bosch Performance CX motor willingly pushes up anything we come across. The SRAM EX1 shifting with its 8-speeds is specifically designed for E-Bikes and despite the increased torque from the motor, rarely falters in its shifting performance.

The 2.6 inch Schwalbe tyres seem to dig in and crawl their way up anything. The front wheel stays planted and we almost never spin out.

Downhill

# There's some satisfaction to making dust clouds - don't worry we put every grain of dirt back in place once we were done

Stability — yes. Feedback — no.

With a hefty 25kg weight this eMTB requires some effort to get around corners. If you’re lacking in strength, then we suggest you use the strong Magura MT7 brakes to slow down, because we’d rather you make it round slowly than overshoot the corner completely and land in the bushes.

As regards the suspension, our testers all agreed: lifeless. Whilst the RockShox Lyrik RC fork dutifully works away at the front, it’s hard to elicit the same response from the rear. The RockShox Super Deluxe RC3 does its best, but the Haibike XDURO Nduro 10.0 sits too deep in its travel, and whilst it happily swallows up impacts, it delivers next to no feedback to the rider.

We like lively and active suspension and this just isn’t our cup of tea. That said, we were still able to ride this bike fast and have fun whilst doing so.

“Seems a bit listless” says one tester

Out on the trail the XDURO Nduro 10.0 met with limited applause. It does everything we ask of it, but just doesn’t excite any of us. The hefty weight makes riding this machine tiring and you’ll soon eschew any messing around. Cruising along it’s a comfortable ride and the Magic Mary tyres do have great grip. It’s nice to ride, but sadly uninspiring.

We also immediately noticed the limited 125mm travel of the LEV DX dropper post. That’s just not enough for this kind of eMTB, where the saddle needs to be completely out of your way.

We also have to take points for the 180mm rotor at the back. With the 25kg weight there shouldn’t be any compromises in terms of braking performance or safety. We want to see 200mm rotors.

We noticed

The saddle is very soft, but didn't suit everyone
# The saddle is very soft, but didn't suit everyone
  • High weight – at 25kg this is an extremely heavy E-Bike. The only thing you can really do is set up your tyres tubeless, but realistically you’re not going to save much weight.
  • Limited travel dropper post – the fitted Kindshock LEV-DX has only 125mm travel which we don’t think is enough for the kind of riding this bike wants to do.
  • Small disc rotor – even if it’s the rear, 180mm rotors are too small. 200mm front and rear always please.

Haibike Xduro Nduro 10.0
# Haibike Xduro Nduro 10.0 - the significant weight and dull suspension did take away from the enjoyment a little

The Haibike XDURO Nduro 10.0 is an eMTB that’s very capable on rough trails. This good-looking E-Freerider is made for demanding terrain and will happily take you where you want to go.

Unfortunately, all too often we thought to ourselves “… too long, too heavy, too cumbersome”. It’s just not a particularly agile or nippy feeling eMTB. The high 25kg weight and the lifeless suspension make the XDURO Nduro 10.0 a tank that forgives a lot of mistakes and will happily roll over everything. However it’s not the most active or engaging ride you will ever have.

About the test

Please expand for details

On our test runs we usually stay in the highest assistance mode and drain the battery completely at least once. We then publish our results on our Strava account.

Our loop has everything we need to test what our E-bikes are capable of:

  • Tight uphill trails with roots, rocks and loam
  • Flat trails with small climbing sections
  • Fast and flowing downhills
  • Long gravel trails up- and downhill

E-bikes are subjected to our route multiple times to allow us to draw our conclusions.

We tested the Haibike XDURO Nduro 10.0 here:

  • On the trails around Bamberg and Bad Kreuznach, Germany. The riding provides narrow and tight trails with technical rooty, rocky sections, steep and technical uphills as well as flowing downhills. In Spain the trails featured large rock garden and sandy terrain.

E-Enduro, E-Trailbike, Hardtail, Downhiller, Rennrad – mir macht jedes Bike Spaß.
I ride everything: E-Enduro, E-Trailbikes, hardtails, downhill, road – I enjoy it all, whether it’s E-assisted or not. I’ll admit that I do quite like having a motor on the uphills though. There’s lots to love about flowing trails; natural or built. The only thing I hate – switchbacks.

I like to ride Enduro, Downhill, Dirtjump, E-Enduro and Crosser – I have fun on every bike. My primary concern is to go fast on downhills – whether in the bike park or on self-climbed trails. E-biking is new for me, but it’s also super fun. Unmatched fun factor for me is only in races. You can find me at most enduro and downhill mass start races. Pulling off on every small edge and maneuvering the bike in oblique positions is just as good for me.
