The Focus Raven2, equipped with a Fazua motor, has been on the market and splitting opinions since 2017. Thanks to the compact motor and battery, the carbon frame is sleek and timeless in its design, though it retains a clear sense of purpose. Even at a glance, the E-Hardtail looks unwavering in its go-fast ambitions. The Focus Raven2 is available in two different specs – the top-end 9.9 model that we tested is available for € 6999.

Geometry

The geometry aligns itself closely with the unpowered Focus Raven. Only the chainstays are slightly longer. The electric Raven’s chainstays measure in at 454 mm, in comparison to the unpowered’s 435 mm. The Focus Raven2 is available in small, medium and large. The 69.8° head angle is steep and suggests agile and lively handling. Finally, thanks to the high-end carbon frame paired with the lightweight Fazua system, Focus has managed to keep the weight of the Raven2 to a sensationally low weight of 15.4 kg (size M).

Components

At the heart of the Focus Raven2 is the Fazua motor-battery unit slotted into the bulky downtube. The E-Hardtail is fitted with a lightweight RockShox SID fork which provides 100 mm travel. The Shimano XT drivetrain offers 11-gears and is renowned for its smooth shifting. Just as you’d expect to find on the cross-country circuit, the tyres are a pair of narrow Schwalbe Racing Ralph tyres. They roll quickly and suit such a racy E-Hardtail extremely well. Focus offers the Raven2 in two variants. We tested the top of the range “9.9”.

Motor & Battery

The compact Fazua Evation 1.0 motor weighs just 2 kg and is neatly integrated into the down tube thanks to its compact dimensions. The 252 Wh battery and lightweight motor are packaged into a cylindrical unit, which – if desired – can be completely removed from the E-Bike. Unlike the other torque-monsters on the market, the Fazua produces only a nominal 60 Nm of torque, which is noticeable out on the trail. The motor engages smoothly, works silently and is not intrusive on your riding at all. Sporty riders will love how this motor behaves – eBikes have never felt so natural. Over the 25km/h assistance limit this motor continues to be a joy to ride, with no pedalling resistance at all. The capacity of the 252 Wh battery is relatively small, though it does only weigh just under 1.5 kg. That lets you carry a spare battery in your rucksack easily.

The Fazua Evation motor is so small, that it can hardly be seen behind the direct mount chainring.

# The remote unit is intuitive to use and provides feedback about the chosen power mode and battery charge with coloured LEDs.

The handlebar mounted remote is easy to actuate and the assistance mode is identified by its corresponding colour. Green – lowest assistance level (75%, 125W), Blue – mid-level assistance (150%, 250W), Pink – highest assistance mode (240%, 400W), White – no assistance.

The Fazua Evation 1.0 system is very smart, but also unique and unlike traditional E-Bikes. The motor often doesn’t have enough grunt to get up the steepest slopes and the small 252 Wh battery means this isn’t an endurance machine. If you’re usually rolling along the trails on unmotorised mountain bikes, you will find a great partner in the Fazua system. However, if you mostly ride eMTBs, you might be expecting more and could reach your physical limits quickly – compared with the Fazua motor, other systems just fly up the hills.

Real-world range

30,47 km / 676 metres vertical
1 h 30 min

Quoted figures for range tend to be on the optimistic side so we like to test bikes for ourselves, draining a whole battery and seeing how far the bike will go. For this test we managed 30.47 km and 676 metres of ascending, staying in the highest power setting throughout. Please note that these values in no way represent rigorous or normalised testing. Instead, they should be seen as ballpark figures. Using lower assistance modes increases the range significantly too.

You can find the exact details of our test ride with the Focus Raven² 9.9 here.

On the Trail

Uphill

When it gets steep, we start to sweat.

Riding uphill, it quite quickly becomes obvious that the Fazua motor’s power isn’t actually all that much. The 60 Nm at 400 Watt peak power does provide some support, but doesn’t really offer what a certain competitor would dub “uphill flow”. The e-bike demands us to put in a significant amount of effort to get up some of the steep ramps on our home trails. Whilst the geometry lets you easily shift your weight and keep the front wheel planted, on chopped up sections of roots or rocks, this E-Bike nary has a chance to make it up smoothly. More often than not those sections require us to get off and push.

Steep ramps require a lot of effort
# Steep ramps require a lot of effort - the Fazua motor doesn't have enough power for true uphill flow.

Downhill

Damn, the saddle gets in the way!

With an E-Hardtail like the Focus Raven2, certain compromises are inevitable. Everything is tuned towards reduced weight for maximum sprinting performance. That means that this E-MTB is fitted with small rotors (180/160 mm), requiring a lot of arm strength to actuate the brake lever on long downhill sections. The narrow 720 mm bars also require a lot of strength to manipulate for precise direction changes on rough terrain.

The fitted carbon seat post offers a lot of comfort, but has some clear disadvantages in comparison with a dropper post. It’s exactly on more technical downhills where we would often wish to be able to get the saddle out of the way.

In short, whilst we can get down anything aboard the Focus Raven2 9.9, it requires keeping the reins tight and careful control, because otherwise we risk being bucked off by this fiery racehorse.

What would we have liked to see the most? That's right, a dropper post!

Trail

The Focus Raven2 9.9 absolutely flies on manicured trails with smooth corners on rolling terrain. The stiff carbon frame and outrageously low weight, paired with the characteristics of the Fazua Evation and the resistance free decoupling of the motor above the 25 km/h assistance limit make it a lot of fun to rag this E-Hardtail along the trails. It’s an intoxicating experience and almost makes us feel as though we could give the pros a run for their money – we’re sure we could finish them off in a race, in the nicest possible way of course.

This E-MTB has very balanced handling and despite the 720 mm bars is easy to manoeuvre. The Schwalbe Racing Ralph tyres offer good traction on dry and hard ground. We also have to praise the RockShox SID fork which offers top-class performance. It has a plush ride and uses its 100 mm travel very effectively.

We noticed

  • Mini disc rotors Whilst smaller rotors, especially on such a tuned E-MTB, help to save some weight, we don’t think it’s worth it. Small disc rotors don’t have a place on E-Mountainbikes and we would recommend fitting larger ones.
  • Narrow bars The 720 mm carbon flat bar is too narrow for our liking. Steering requires a lot more input and it feels a little “claustrophobic”. Wider bars would improve the handling here.
  • No dropper post Just fit a dropper!
  • Small battery capacity This cuts both ways, but we still feel we ought to mention it. The compact battery has a capacity of only 252 Wh. Obviously that means that it is a small and lightweight unit, but it also means significantly less range for those who ride with more support from their motor.
The cockpit is nice and clean, but the 720 mm narrow bars and lack of dropper post impact negatively on the performance of the Focus Raven² 9.9.

Summary: Focus Raven² 9.9

“Outrageously light &

extremely well designed!” Rico Haase

Beautiful, timeless and really nice to ride – those are just a few words to describe the Focus Raven2. The handsome carbon frame and lustrous finish are truly a sight to behold. Thanks to the Fazua motor, riding above the 25 km/h assistance limit is also a lot of fun and the low overall weight of the bike means that at times, it’s hard to tell that you’re riding an E-Bike.

The Focus Raven2 9.9 is an E-Bike that sits between two different worlds. We would call it a “support hybrid” because whilst it provides some help on the uphills, it never delivers that true E-Bike feeling. If you’re keeping an eye on your fitness and want to train hard without excessive peak efforts, we can happily recommend this E-MTB to you. If you’re looking for powerful support in order to find your uphill flow, this model is hard to recommend.

Would we buy this E-Hardtail. Yes! The handling above the 25 km/h limit and the low weight make the Focus Raven2 an absolute racing rocket! Thumbs up for this beautiful E-Hardtail.

About the test

Please expand for details

On our test runs, we usually stay in the highest assistance mode and drain the battery completely at least once. We then publish our results on our Strava account.

Our loop has everything we need to test what our E-bikes are capable of:

  • Tight uphill trails with roots, rocks and loam
  • Flat trails with small climbing sections
  • Fast and flowing downhills
  • Long gravel trails up- and downhill

E-bikes are subjected to our route multiple times to allow us to draw our conclusions.

We tested the Focus Raven² here:

  • On the trails around Bamberg, Germany. The riding provides narrow and tight trails with rooty, rocky sections, steep and technical uphills as well as flowing downhills.
