We’ve been riding the Bulls E-Core EVO AM. This E-Trailbike, fitted with a powerful Shimano Steps E8000 motor, makes use of several technical innovations. Chief amongst them is the TwinCore technology, that allows a second battery to be integrated into the downtube and the battery capacity to be increased to a generous 750 Wh. So what is this E-Bike capable of aside from all its innovative features? We’ve found out for you.

The Bull E-Core Evo AM RS Di2 is the most all-mountain oriented E-Bike in our test. That means this plus-tyred bike offers 150 mm travel front and rear controlled by capable Fox Factory equipment. The Shimano Steps E8000 motor is powered by a 375 Wh battery, the capacity of which can be expanded with a second, pluggable battery, increasing the total capacity to 750 Wh. The electronic Shimano Di2 drivetrain works in perfect unison with the Shimano motor and provides very smooth shifting. Solid wheel from DT Swiss, powerful Magura MT7 brakes and Schwalbe Magic Mary 27.5” tyres make up the package for trail riding. The Bulls E-Core EVO AM is available in two variants for € 5499 and € 6499 respectively – the model we tested is the top of the range option.

Geometry

Bulls offer the E-Core Evo in four different frame sizes: S, M, L and XL. The S starts with a seat tube length of 41 cm which grows to 54 cm for the XL bike. Look more closely at the geometry figures and you’ll notice that the bike errs on the side of comfort rather than performance. For example, in a size L the reach measures in at 450 mm and the stack at 604 mm, resulting in a relatively short and upright E-Bike. The relatively steep 67.5 ° head angle emphasises this impression. However, the 438 mm chainstays promise lively and agile handling.

Unfortunately, with a second battery, the Bulls E-Core Evo is a heavy beast and weighs in at more than 25 kg – sorry but that’s just a little too much Bulls.

Components

The Bulls E-Core EVO AM is available with two component specs. All the models come fitted with a Shimano Steps E800 motor and 375 Wh battery as standard. The innovative TwinCore technology makes it incredibly easy to double the battery capacity of the bike, though you’ll have to buy the optional second battery (€ 499) which then slots neatly into the downtube. That means you have a generous 750 Wh capacity to play with on longer rides. The top of the range model we tested arrived with a promising complement of 150 mm travel Fox Factory suspension with its svelte Kashima coating. The Shimano Deore XT Di2 drivetrain works seamlessly together with the Shimano motor. The powerful Magura MT7 brakes offer immense stopping power whilst out riding. The package is nicely finished with Schwalbe Magic Mary tyres that should provide oodles of grip.

An additional highlight on our model was the innovative MonkeyLink light system that it came fitted with.

Motor & Battery

The Shimano Steps E8000 motor was introduced in 2016 and since then has started popping up on more and more E-Bikes. The 2.8kg motor is definitely one of the lighter systems available and together with the ergonomic controls, it’s an intuitive system to use. Along with its stellar performance, the popularity of the Shimano motor is likely also due to its small volume. The compact dimensions free up the design of the frame allowing agile geometries and kinematics to be engineered. Chainstays don’t have to be excessively long because cranks are mounted fairly centrally in the motor unit, meaning that the dimensions are usually similar to a non-motorised bike. Finally, the 175mm Q-factor is narrower than many competitors on the market.

At the heart of the E-MTB is the compact Shimano Steps E8000 motor
# At the heart of the E-MTB is the compact Shimano Steps E8000 motor - it provides consistent support and a natural ride feeling
TwinCore technology makes it possible to place two batteries in the downtube, doubling the capacity to 750 Wh
# TwinCore technology makes it possible to place two batteries in the downtube, doubling the capacity to 750 Wh - this is a brilliant idea and we hope we will see similar solutions from other manufacturers

A unique feature of the Bulls E-Core Evo is the TwinCore technology that allows you to easily increase the battery capacity to 750 Wh. The downtube has two compartments left and right. From the factory, one of these is fitted with a battery whilst the other can be used for carrying spares. The narrow battery fits into the downtube from the side and you have the option of purchasing a second battery for € 499 and to simply insert into the free slot on the downtube, doubling the capacity – that’s quite a good idea! The motor then uses both batteries. avoiding having to configure batteries or cable, as you have to with Focus’ system. We like the TwinCore system a lot.

Three assistance modes – ECO, TRAIL and BOOST – cover all eventualities during your rides. ECO reduces the power, but you’ll get increased range. The dynamic TRAIL mode modulates the power up to 60% of the maximum power, depending on what’s required. Software analyses your pedal strokes to determine how much assistance is required at any given moment. Pedalling in this mode feels particularly natural and the mode offers a good compromise between support and range. BOOST puts the pedal to the metal and always delivers the maximum available power. The Shimano Steps E8000 delivers a maximum 70Nm torque and we have never experienced any overheating problems.

Shimano-Display
# Shimano-Display - geschützt, knackscharf, gut lesbar – einfach unser Lieblingsdisplay

The display can only be described in one way – excellent. The unit is small, robust, well finished and mounted in a protected place just behind the bars. That’s how it should be. Wherever you’re riding the high contrast and high saturation LCD panel is easy to read and understand. The display tells you which gear you are in and colour codes the different assistance modes to let you know which you are using. Using Bluetooth and a companion smartphone app you can adjust settings to your taste. If you want to know your cadence – you can show that on the display. The combination of a compact motor, powerful assistance and the brilliant display makes the Shimano Steps system one to look out for if you’re in the market for an E-Bike.

Real-world range

41 km / 965 metres vertical

Quoted figures for range tend to be on the optimistic side so we like to test bikes for ourselves, draining a whole battery and seeing how far the bike will go. For this test we managed 41 km and 965  metres of ascending, staying in the highest power setting throughout. Please note that these values in no way represent rigorous or normalised testing. Instead, they should be seen as ballpark figures. Using lower assistance modes increases the range significantly too.

On the Trail

Uphill

The Bulls E-Core Evo is powered by a Shimano Steps E8000 motor, which obediently provides the torque you need to get up the hill, regardless of what you’re going up. The upright position allows you to maintain a good overview over the trail and the weight distribution means you don’t need too much input at the bars in order to lift the front wheel over obstacles. Unfortunately, that also means that extremely steep sections can only be mastered by keeping your weight all the way forwards and riding very cleanly. The front wheel tends to lift and robs you of the chance to win your uphill battles.

The Schwalbe Magic Mary tyres have to receive high praises as they never left us wanting for grip or traction.

On steep sections, you have to move your weight far forwards in order to maintain traction
# On steep sections, you have to move your weight far forwards in order to maintain traction

Downhill

Short and upright – it’s not a fast bike.

Bulls have equipped the E-Core Evo with top of the line Fox Factory suspension. At the front is a Kashima coated Fox 36 and at the rear a Fox Float DPS shock. The suspension feels very plush and complement the comfortable geometry very well. However, the Bulls E-Core Evo doesn’t really encourage you to ride at top speeds or push every ounce of performance from it – the E-Bike is just a little too short and tall (450 mm reach / 604 mm stack). You’ll ride the trail in good spirits and downhill sections are dispatched in a relaxed, rather than aggressive style. The Magura MT Trail brakes start to complain a little on very steep terrain, which is no surprise given the 180 mm rotor fitted to the rear of this 25 kg E-Bike. We quickly found that the rotor discoloured and after multiple descents, the blueing of the steel is a clear sign that it’s too small.

However, the Schwalbe Magic Mary tyres also proved themselves on the downhills with excellent grip, traction and tracking even at low air pressures.

The short and steep geometry leads to an unsettled feeling on steep downhills

Trail

Comfortable cruising along the trail.

Having fun with a day of riding trails is what the Bull E-Core Evo is perfect for. If you want to get out and experience nature, then this E-MTB is completely in its element. The smart expansion option for the battery means longer rides can be easily undertaken.

We roll comfortably along the trail and are content in the knowledge that this E-Bike isn’t a high-octane ride. We hold back and flow along the trails.

We also liked the easy to mount MonkeyLink light a lot. Riding at dusk is a lot more fun when you can see something!

When the trail has some flow, the Bulls E-Core Evo is completely in its element
# When the trail has some flow, the Bulls E-Core Evo is completely in its element - we reduce the speed and float along the trail

We noticed:

  • 180 mm rotors A 25 kg E-Bike shouldn’t ever have caught a glimpse of a small 180 mm rotor! We would urgently replace this with a bigger option. This would improve the performance and stopping power of the Magura brakes, particularly on sustained downhills, significantly.
  • Dated geometry This is what E-Bikes felt like 5-years ago – tall and short. The geometry is comfortable but doesn’t suit an E-Mountainbike if you want to ride aggressively.
  • Charging port cover is easily lostThe cover for the battery port is a small rubber plug that is attached with a magnet. Charge the battery when it’s on the bike and you have to take the cover off. And what happens if you leave a small rubber bung lying around? Yep, it inevitably goes missing.
The 180 mm small disc rotor visibly protested the torture

About the test

Please expand for details

On our test runs we usually stay in the highest assistance mode and drain the battery completely at least once. We then publish our results on our Strava account.

Our loop has everything we need to test what our E-bikes are capable of:

  • Tight uphill trails with roots, rocks and loam
  • Flat trails with small climbing sections
  • Fast and flowing downhills
  • Long gravel trails up- and downhill

E-bikes are subjected to our route multiple times to allow us to draw our conclusions.

We tested the Bulls E-Core EVO AM here:

  • Bamber/Bad Kreuznach, Germany: The riding provides narrow and tight trails with rooty, rocky sections, steep and technical uphills as well as flowing downhills.
  • Aínsa, Spanien: The trails in this region have played host to the legendary Enduro World Series.

E-Enduro, E-Trailbike, Hardtail, Downhiller, Rennrad – mir macht jedes Bike Spaß.
I ride everything: E-Enduro, E-Trailbikes, hardtails, downhill, road – I enjoy it all, whether it’s E-assisted or not. I’ll admit that I do quite like having a motor on the uphills though. There’s lots to love about flowing trails; natural or built. The only thing I hate – switchbacks.

I like to ride Enduro, Downhill, Dirtjump, E-Enduro and Crosser – I have fun on every bike. My primary concern is to go fast on downhills – whether in the bike park or on self-climbed trails. E-biking is new for me, but it’s also super fun. Unmatched fun factor for me is only in races. You can find me at most enduro and downhill mass start races. Pulling off on every small edge and maneuvering the bike in oblique positions is just as good for me.
